Washing Baby Clothes

So, I think I am going to begin to wash the baby's clothes, sheets, etc. this weekend. I have a few questions.

Obviously, anything I wash for her has to be washed seperately from our regular laundry, right? I am going to use All Free and Clear since that is what we use anyway, and I read that it is ok to use for babies. Can I put fabric softener in the wash? I'm thinking that I probably cant, right? So, if I cant use fabric softener, and read that dryer sheets are a no-no too- isnt what I wash going to come out hard?

Also- do I wash the bumper for her crib?

Help!

Re: Washing Baby Clothes

I washed everything with no fabric softener or dryer sheets and they came out fine..... not hard at all.....

We opted not to wash the bumpers, although I know some people do......

It was sooooo much work ... good luck

Sure, I heard they can lose their shape and I did some research on here to learn many people do not wash them..... also, I have two sisters w/ 5 nieces and nephews and neither of them washed the bumpers..... so I figured I would leave them as is.....

Re: Washing Baby Clothes

I was told to not even use the bumpers in the beginning, due to SIDS. Absolute confusion!!!

Actually, you could use the bumper at the beginning (if DC will be in the crib right away) b/c they aren't going to be moving around--especially if you swaddle.

I washed all my 0-3 and NB clothes before he wore them....but things he has gotten since then I have just put on him and he was fine (he is 10 weeks old).

BRU sells Totally Toddler dryer sheets if you want to use something.

You can totally wash the baby's clothes with everyone else's clothes. Just make sure you use the All Free & Clear or something similar.

I need to get on this...I am 35 weeks and have washed nothing!! But, I do plan on washing the bumper....we have a front loading washer and it will be gentle enough to wash it. I had set up the nursery a while ago to test out our cat...he only went in once, but I want to be sure that the cat hair is gone before the baby comes.

Re: Washing Baby Clothes

Ok, this might sound dumb, but do you HAVE to wash everything first? Is it really BAD if you don't? Or just icky for the baby?
The reason is, I have a TON of 0-3 month clothes for the baby and I have NO IDEA what she will end up wearing. If I wash the clothes, then obviously I can't return anything.....

I would wash a bunch of it....DS was 6lbs, 12oz at birth ad 20 inches long, NOT that tiny. But he is just NOW at 2 months old really fitting into his 0-3 clothes and he has a lot and has definately worn everything at least once. Last week, when he was 9 weeks old was teh first time I put away a newborn sleeper.

The reason you wash it all is b/c who knows how many hands handled it and you don't know if baby will have any allergies.

And even if you have a ton, baby clothes are TINY, even a huge load of DS' stuff is not a big load of clothes, KWIM?

It's amazing how things have changed. When I had my son 16 years ago, we used regular detergent and fabric softener and his clothes/skin were just fine.

Of course this time around I purchased the Target brand of Dreft (because I think Dreft smells) and bought Downy Free. I really don't think it's necessary, but I will do it just to see what the difference is.

As for bumpers, I plan to use them as well. I'm trying not to get too caught up in all the hype of these doctors/specialists scaring new mothers to death.

Re: Washing Baby Clothes

You don't HAVE to wash anything. I think many mothers just feel better doing so. As for crib bumpers, if you wash them, I wouldn't dry them. Although, your baby won't really be touching them or coming close to touching them for months, so it's really not necessary.

I didn't wash anything other than her sheets to make them softer and the diaper burp cloths to make them thicker. I was using All free and clear, but now I just use whatever I'm using on my clothes and she is still alive and kickin' with no rashes to report Chat Icon

Fabric softner..they say not to use it because it takes the flame retardent off the PJS.

Re: Washing Baby Clothes

We have washed clothes, bumper pads and will also be washing the coverings on the car seat. We have been using Dreft because we have it from the shower and then will use the Tide Free & Clear but have not used any dryer sheets.
And everything we washed went into the dryer with no problems.

I use all free & clear as well. No fabric softener, no dryer sheets. We wash our clothing separately. I use the dryer balls to fluff the clothing. I am also using all f&c on my clothing now too, since DS loves to be held & makes a lot of contact with my clothing.
