Re: for those in charlotte NC
Charlotte itself is in Mecklenburg County. Mecklenburg county is great because you're much closer to uptown Charlotte, etc. However, the schools are so-so depending on the area you live in, some are fantastic, others are really bad.
Union County is to the south of Mecklenburg, and has a MUCH better school system. The down side is that most places in Union County have pretty bad traffic in the mornings and at night if you're trying to get to Uptown Charlotte to work.
To the north of Meck is Cabarrus County, I dont know much about the schools up there.
Taxes are lower in Cabarrus and Union, but compared to NY, the taxes in Mecklenburg are still incredibly low (we pay around $2,500 a year for a 5 bedroom 2300 sq ft house).
We've been in Charlotte in Mecklenburg County for 2.5 years now (we're about to move into our new house, also in Mecklenburg). I work in uptown Charlotte and plan on staying in Mecklenburg for the foreseeable future.
All in all, it's a great area to live, depends on what fits you the best.
Let me know if I can help with anything else.

We are looking into Union County in the Indian Trail area. I have heard about the traffic but the schools there are supposed to be excellent! Good luck!

We just moved to Union County 3 days ago and we LOVE it!!!! My sister has been here for a year (she moved from Farmingdale) and says she will never go back!!!
I haven't been here long enough to say, but we ARE loving our new house.

My brotherr lives in Indian Trail, and the kids go to Union County shools, they are a bit harder on the kids but still great. They love it. We are actually moving down to either Union County or Mecklenburg(sp) County. Traffic going to Charlotte in the morning is a joke, its like the LIE when it rains or there is an accident. I took us like 2 hours to get to the airport when in real time it is around 1/2-45 min.

Re: for those in charlotte NC
We live in Cabarrus county, north of Charlotte. The town we live in has excellent schools and the housing is very affordable. We work in Charlotte and the commute is not bad at all-15 miles, takes about 25-35 minutes depending on traffic.
I should add, we looked in Mecklenberg, Cabarrus, and Union counties. We crossed Union County off of our list because it was too far and the commute would have been tough-we wanted something no more than 30-40 minutes on a bad day. We crossed Mecklenberg off beucase the areas we were looking in (Ballentyne-which had good schools, etc.) were too congested for our taste. Cabarrus worked well because it is no overly crowed, there isn't traffic just to get to the mall or supermarket, etc. However, it is not for everyone.
