I lied my butt off

I had a meeting with my manager today about my annual raise (YAY Chat Icon ) but he also took that meeting time to ask about when I was leaving on maternity leave and all that good stuff. I plan on leaving at 36 weeks and not coming back. But I told him I was leaving 2 weeks before my due date and only taking the full FMLA time (12 weeks). I feel bad for lying but I dont want to burn any bridges you know? Did I do the right thing?

I think you did. Many women have the baby and realize that work just isn't for them. Whatever is best for you, is what you should do. They wouldn't think twice to lay off workers at any time, you should do what is best for you!!!

yes. I think you did. Why risk putting you in a position not getting paid during maternity leave by being honest.

Re: I lied my butt off

You did the right thing..
I never had any intention of returning to my job once I was out on maternity leave.. but I let my office *think* I was coming back up until I left.. I didn't want them effing around with my disability ..

They really won't be shocked, many ladies decide once they are out that they wont return, you won't be the first.. no worries Chat Icon

I think this was the right thing also. You need to think of yourself and your family. And who knows? While you may not want to go back now, you may find yourself going crazy staying home. I know people who felt this way, and wound up going back to work earlier than they thought they would.

Re: I lied my butt off

Well what do you lose by telling them the truth??

For me, I don't lose anything...they don't offer maternity pay or disability so I told them the truth...which they were very happy about so they can plan for next year and train new people on my clients...and they're not mad at me, so *incase* I do want to come back or utilize their resources some how (tax planning, etc), I can, with out feeling guilty that I lied in the first place.

If you think they will slight you in any way by telling them your not coming back then I think you did the right thing.

Thanks ladies!

Actually if I told the truth I might lose my bonus and I'm not sure about the rules with disability. Plus they would treat me different, kind of that "dead man walking" treatment.

Re: I lied my butt off

Yeah...because you are entitled to maternity leave. If you tell them you are leaving for good, they may try to find a way to get rid of you before hand.

The man will always win. So keep to your story.

Yes, you did the right thing.

Honestly, you really don't know what situation you will be in after your 12 weeks FMLA.

Don't burn your bridges now..... you just never know.

It's business!!!!!

Re: I lied my butt off

I'm in the same boat. I plan on utilizing my full 90 day paid leave even if I come back for a week or so after. I don't want to get screwed or have to pay anything back. I'm taking my accurals here and there trying not to be too conspicious but I think I will end up loosing vacation and personal time which I'd rather than disability pay.

Re: I lied my butt off

I did the same thing... I am a school psychologist and didn't want my building changed, so I told them I was returning after my FMLA... but I intend on taking the rest of the year.... Sometimes, you have to watch out for yourself and your family... that is what is truly important!

Re: I lied my butt off

you totally did the right thing...and you can definitely say lsomething like childcare fell through for you and you have no choice but to stay home now...or something like that. Take all the paid maternity leave your entitled to and dont worry about it! i know you will leave off on good terms with your job and i really think they will be understanding about it because your leaving with intentions of returning back to work. dont feel bad one bit! Re: I lied my butt off

As someone who lost out on my raise until I came back because "I can't give you a raise, the president knows you're pregnant." Um I'm the HR person - did you really just say that to me???, YOU ABSOLUTELY DID THE RIGHT THING!!

With the prorated amount from when I would have gotten the raise until I actually did, it was $7500 that I missed out. That's a good amount of diapers.

Re: I lied my butt off

I think you did the right thing too. I'm not sure if I'm going back, but I earned my disability pay from this crappy job, so whether I return or not, that decision is not something they need to know I'm wrestling with.

Re: I lied my butt off

You did the right thing. First, who knows? Maybe circumstances will change and you might want to go back, a lot can change in a few months. Second, I think most places wouldn't hesitate to bend the truth a bit if they were looking to let you go.
