APT. requirements
I Just called to inquire about an apartment in a house and the lady told me they only want a married couple to rent it. Is this common?

Re: APT. requirements
I don't think it's normal and I am not sure if it is legal either but maybe she is very Christian or something....

Re: APT. requirements
that's discrimination.
on the other hand, if you went to look at it and you were not a married couple she could just tell you it's rented and waste your time.
Discrimination laws are very clear. You may want to stay clear of people that set up rules like this. If you end up renting it, the landlord could make living there miserable for you.

Re: APT. requirements
Here's a link to NY's fair housing laws Fair Housing Laws. According to the law on this website, a landlord can't refuse to rent to single people. There seem to be some restrictions though as to when the laws apply - like if the owner lives in one of the apartments in a 2 family house.

Re: APT. requirements
It is illegal, but if its an illegal apartment, then it doesn't matter. She can do whatever she wants.

Not true at all. You can report her as having an illegal apartment. She can't do whatever she wants. If she wants to stay incognito with her illegal apartment she had better be careful with discrimination.
