Stick to the registry or go on your own?

when shopping for a shower, baby or bridal, do you stick to the registry or do you get what you want? I always, always, always stick to the registry. Especially when it comes to Dh's family, I would never knwo what to get them on my own.

The reason I ask is this: I am having anxiety over my shower. It's nto anytime soon, most likely will be in Sept., I'm not planning it so I don't know when, but I know that dh has cousins that have kids. i'm jsut worried they will think they know best and buy me a different brand then what we registered for. KWIM? It's hard to explain, I am just not looking forward to my shower for that reason.

calm me down, plese.

I always stick to the registry or buy a gift card from that store.

I know what you mean though, for our wedding we got a lotta crap we didn't like and couldn't return b/c people bought things from where ever. Either that or they were teh re-gifters!!! Its so annoying and such a waste of $$!

I always stick to the registry or give gift cards or cash. I may buy clothes outside of the registry if alot of the good items are taken but I would never buy a carseat or stroller that is not on the registry.

seriously, what is with people. for my shower I got stuff off my registry, but i still felt a little slighted b/c i went out on my own and got gifts. they all chipped in. yes they got me nice stuff, but come on. i told dh that from now on, he can shop for his family.

I always stick to the registry. Actually I wish family and friends would register for holdiays & b-days to make it easier for me. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I know what you mean about people doing their own shopping, but dont stress over it. You cant do much about it besides hope they purchased it from a store with a easy return system.

you're right. i've jokingly suggested to dh that thye add cards to the invites with "suggested" gifts. Chat Icon of course I would never do that, but that is how nuts this is making me. I'll just have to watch the registry in a few weeks and see whats what.

and i agree with the clothes and little things, i do that too. i have no problems with that.

I pretty much always stick to the registry. Unless its a baby shower- sometimes I'll buy something from the registry and then some cute clothes or something.

it depends on how creative im feeling. Sometimes i will go off the reigistry and get a more expensive item, and sometimes i like to get something a little less expensive on the registry and then do somehting on my own.

I always stick to the registry or do a gift card. It's so much nicer that way. No returns, hassles, etc.

I always stick to the registry unless there is nothing left...and even then I try to buy up all the little things to make one bigger gift. Even if I have to go off the registry, every baby shower gift I've ever purchased came from Babies R Us so it's returnable.

I always buy off the registry. It makes it so simple plus free gift wrap right near the checkout counter at Babies R Us!

I try to stick to the registry. Sometimes, some things you get are really nice. My aunt got me a hand painted rocking chair with Alex's name on it that I love.

Re: Stick to the registry or go on your own?

I stick to the registry. For the baby shower registry I registered, but then told my sister-in-laws, that they knew better than I did and if they thought something worked out better for them, I'd rather that. But you could probably could do the opposite way, and just say, how much you really love this specific thing, or how you heard from a friend it was the best thing they had for their baby and so you would like the same?

i stick to the registry, although i try to add something if i think its worth it/needed. A good friend for my baby shower bought like 4 items off the registry and gave us 2 lullaby CD's of DH favorite bands NIN and tool, he was so happy, and then she also bought a CD player that attaches to the crib (didn't even know BRU had that but they do), it wasn't on my registry but is such a cool gift and i am glad she got them for us.

Wow. I didn't realize that everyone stuck to the registries.

I usually do, but there are times when the stuff I would have purchased already has been or things are out of my price range. Now that I have DS I usually buy off the registry and through in a cute outfit or something that I find useful.

And I got a few things that I didn't register for and I haven't seen on any of my friend's registries that I would buy b/c I LOVE.

Re: Stick to the registry or go on your own?

I believe in sticking to a registry, but I know from my bridal shower experience that my family as well as dh's shop on their own. I find it annoying when people don't use a registry. JMO

Re: Stick to the registry or go on your own?

Generally, I stick to the registry, but if I venture off, I always buy from a place that is easy to return to.

I have a friend who rarely buys from a registry, but she gets beautiful and thoughtful gifts for people, so that I don't mind Chat Icon

Me too!!!! If I buy something not froom the reg it's something very personal and something I KNOW the parents would like. IE: My best friend is VERY religious(?) so a group of us bought her the bedding and accessories she asked for and then I bought her a silver cross with the babies name engraved on it and a card that explained that when Alani came she could go back and have her dob weight, height engraved on there as well. I then took it to our church and had our minister say a prayer for health/saftey/good fortune over it. She loved it, but again I knew her well enough. If I buy something on my own I always tape the receite to the top of the box or put it into the card. I think it's tacky to not get what people are asking for. They are asking for a reason, but I also think it's kind of tacky not to make it personal if you can.

Re: Stick to the registry or go on your own?

I usually stick to the registry. I have added things though. Like I bought the bathtub, washcloths, hooded towels, etc and then threw in baby tylenol, butt paste, baby wash, etc to make up the price I wanted to spend.

If I don't stick with the registry for whatever reason - I give a gift receipt.
