Re: JESSICA ALBA: DON'T CALL ME A LATINA!!
I avoid drama. I celebrate all the holidays equally. St. Pat's, Cinco de Mayo, July 4th, Passover, Christmas, etc.

...my husband is a fourth generation American and although he acknowledges where he comes from, he doesn't really associate himself with those cultures bc he wasn't raised in them...he considers himself as an American and thats it.
Actually, this is how I feel. I am 4th generation and I am proud to say that I am Mexican-American. Although, I acknowledge my Mexican Roots, born n raised in Texas is completely different from being born n raised in Mexico. As is being Born N Raised Mexican American in California. Lots of commonalities but very different. Living here in NY, most assume that I from Mexico and claim to be more American than me when in fact, my ancestors have probably been here longer than theirs. It does bother me.
As for her comments, it does sound like she is ashamed of her ancestory but then again, the interviewer could of twisted her words around.

I just think it's funny that people think being "american" is something in and of itself. it's not. we are still too young.
People born in America- are Americans- not everyone in this country add Italian, Irish, African or any other enthicy in front of American

Cut herself loose?! She sounds very ashamed of her ancestry. Just looking at her, she is pure "latina" no matter how long she or her family have been in this country. Of course she is American, but she is denying her very obvious background.

ITA. I'm shocked that this thread turned into a debate!

Re: JESSICA ALBA: DON'T CALL ME A LATINA!!
I am a mix of about 10 different ethnicities, so really I don't feel any particular connection to any of them. Personally I identify myself as American when out of the country (not a Greek-Irish-Polish-Dutch-Eukrainian-etc,etc who was born in America). And even though North America is composed of Canada, USA and Mexico, I am pretty sure anywhere you go, American means the same thing - from the United States of America (and when you hear other countries bashing on Americans - I am PRETTY sure they are talking about us!), whereas North American is a more inclusive term.
And I think there is an American culture. If you go to any other country and ask them to say something about the American culture/lifestyle, I am 100% certain they would have ALOT to say (mostly bad). I think certain people were raised to be more in touch with their ancestry and where their ancestors are from (and perhaps are less Americanized), and I say that that is WONDERFUL for them and I thnk it is a powerful thing, but as someone who wasn't, I don't think it is fair to judge or say it is a disgrace. That is just how it goes. I definitely understand where Alba is coming from.

God forbid we actually have a discussion about something. What she said sparked a debate, big deal. And it's not necessarily about her.
