For those who had past cervical biopsies...

After reading both Donna's and Chelle's birth stories are you nervous about what the effect these biopsies might have on your ability to give birth vaginally? I feel a bit mislead by my old GYN for not informing me about this type of complication.

Donna, Chelle (or anyone else who has had the same complication), did you or your dr. have any inkling something like this might potentially happen?

I'm going to talk to my doctor about this tomorrow at my appointment.....

I've had two cervical biopsies, one about 15 yrs ago and one about 8 yrs ago. I already know I'm not going to deliver vaginally but I would be concerned enough to talk to my doctor about it.

I worry about that too. I had biopsy and cryosurgery and I worry that it did something to my cervix. My current doc knows about it, and she hasn't mentioned anything about complications.
I had also wondered if it had anything to do with my unexplained infertility.

I never worried about it until I read these posts.
I will probably mention it.

I had cryosurgery a few years ago.

I had a biopsy. But I would think a biopsy alone would not create that much of a scar.

But I think it's worth a question to the dr.

Re: For those who had past cervical biopsies...

I had a leap done a few years ago.
they're only concern with me in the beginning in regards to that was the potiential of the cervix opening early. I believe the correct term would be an incompetent cervix. They discussed the possibility of doing a cerclage, but I didn't end up needing that.

not sure if that applies to your situation, or Donna's/Chelle's. So far, I'm 36 wks and 1cm dialated, cervix seems to be working fine. Although, who knows maybe I won't go past 3-4 cms??? I'm not that concerned about it though.

Re: For those who had past cervical biopsies...

I had a biopsy about 4 years ago and it made me a nervous wreck from weeks 16-25 (they kept measuring my cervix through transvaginal u/s's and the first measurement was wrong...long story short they told me I had a really short cervix but I actually don't). Back when I got the biopsy I remember asking my Dr. if the procedure was going to effect my ability to have children and she emphatically told me "no". I wish she would have been more upfront with me about complications that can arise.

In terms of the actual delivery....my current Dr. has said nothing. What kinds of things can happen??

Re: For those who had past cervical biopsies...

I had a LEEP procedure done about a year and a half ago.

I was told the main thing they worry about is whether or not the cervix will be long enough to stay closed as long as it needs to be since they do cut out a piece of the cervix.

At 14 weeks, they measured the length of my cervix and apparently it is long enough, so my doctor is not worried about me trying to go vaginally.

I would just talk to your doctor about it. They will measure you and decide if there is anything for them to be on the lookout for! It will be fine!

Re: For those who had past cervical biopsies...

I had known that the ability to CARRY a baby might be affected (cervical incompetance)- but I've never heard about a cervix unable to dilate due to these procedures- both of which occurred to Donna and Chelle and required them to have a C/S.

Re: For those who had past cervical biopsies...

I had a cone biopsy/laser procedure 6 years ago. My scarring is making it impossible for me to get pregnant without medical intervention. I am still not pregnant, but I have options. If I cannot deliver vaginally, I have another option. This is not something I can see myself truly stressing over, because there may not be a choice.

Great question!! Chat Icon

I was NEVER INFORMED of the scar tissue on my cervix. I had the biopsy and the freezing done over 10 years ago!! Not once in a routine pap was there ever mention of scar tissue. The first time I had heard of it was the day before my water broke when I got my final exam and the Dr. told me. Shocked!

I was told that because everything was "thinned out" that's why they were able to detect it.

Now, because of the original scar tissue AND the scar tissue that I'm assuming will build up because she cut my cervix 3 times, I now have an incompetent cervix. I hope I'm saying that right. The dr. told me that the next time I get pregnant, I might not be able to "hold my pregnancy" and they'd have to put a stich in there.

So many things to look forward to! Chat Icon SO.. for me, I don't think that I will ever have the vaginal birth I want due to all the scarring Chat Icon
