It looks like the owners had it filled. I know a few homeowner's who do this - my ILs are looking into it as well.

I wouldn't be surprised - Ours sucks and cold air always drafts through in the winter (even with the flu(?) shut) I end up putting blankets over it to stop a little bit.

Or, it's just a fake fireplace. I've seen people just put up a brick or stone wall that gives the appearance of a fireplace.
