Planting sunflowers

My neighbor just gave me a packet of sunflower seeds...I know they get huge really quick...

Any advice from those who have grown them before?

Not really, they are pretty easy to grow, though you will need to stake them when they get taller.

If you want to eat the seeds, cover the flowers with cheesecloth or something similar--birds will pick them clean.

Re: Planting sunflowers

You'll get a lot of bees too, so don't plant them in a high traffic area. I spaced my seeds out too much and had a lot of gaps. I think next time, I'll put them closer together.

Good luck with yours! Chat Icon

Re: Planting sunflowers

This is the first year I've planted them and they seem to be doing well. I just water a lot.

I didn't plant any yet this year but I usually plant them in pots with herbs. This year I think I'll plant them against the fence. They are so easy & so pretty.

Re: Planting sunflowers

I had an idea, didn't know if you ladies knew about the fishing line trick.

I used fishing line years ago as an invisible trellis for morning glory vines. You couldn't see the line so it looked like the vines were floating in the air.

If you buy the big stakes for the sunflowers, you could wind the fishing line around the stakes themselves to provide support without having to tie the sunflowers to them.

I'm not sure I'm explaining it will enough so let me know if I'm making no sense. Chat Icon
