UPDATE misunderstanding?? thoughts please...

So my DH and I are in our new co-op over the weekend working. We meet the super and take him upstairs to ask him a few things. I say that we'll be taking down the cabinets in the kitchen because they are corroded (and had dead bugs in them) and that our application for the new cabinets is with the Board. I ask him where we should dispose of the trash. He assesses the situation (small kitchen, 10x7, and missing a wall of cabinets!) and tells us where to drag the cabinets out to. So we do it. I get a phone call today saying "Whoa, the building manager says you need to get a dumpster. That's not the place for the cabinets." "Isn't that where you told me to put them? You knew what we were putting out." "Yes, but you have to get a dumptser he says. It's too much" "Can I just put out a little at a time?" "Call the manager, he'll tell you about the dumpster rule."

UMMMMM .... i left a message for the bldg manager, but is it just me? Should I have to get a dumpster for 10 kitchen cabinets that are plywood and a 6 ft formica countertop" when I was told I could put them out there.

I don't want to tick anyone off, but I also don't want to spend hundreds for something that I was told I was able to do. If he said 'oh that's too much' when they were still installed we would have taken 1 down at a time, smashed it and bagged it and put it at the curb. Now they want it out of the storage area. Mind you, there is loads of other crap in there including old cars and couches, etc..

How would you handle this?

ETA: I looked up the garbage rules for our town and it's 250 lbs at a time and 10 pieces of furniture at a time.

UPDATE::: DH talked to bldg mgr. There is no problem. We have to put the cabinets out ourselves a little at a time and see if the picky garbagemen take them. After all that aggravation it seems like the super blew it out of proprotion. The super called the bldg mgr. So weird!

Honestly, I read your post and don't even understand how he could tell you to put it out and then totally retract that statement. If it may be a problem, then I would write a letter to the board and explain that he came and said to put it all out.
If there are cars there, how can some cabinets be a problem? And why doesn't it get removed?

Re: misunderstanding?? thoughts please...

This is one of the tricky things about co-ops. I would wait for the building mgr to call back and see what he says.

If he is adamant that you have to get a dumpster, I don't know if you'll have much choice. Is there anything in your co-op rules regarding construction? We live in a condo, but things are spelled out very precisely in our condo rules.

Being totally honest - I would carefully approach the ". . . but the super said we could" argument. The one person you don't want ticked at you is the super, IMO.

I don't want the super ticked at me, but in all honesty, how would I have found this obscure place to put the cabinets if I wasn't taken down there by the super and told and shown exactly where to put it? I didn't go exploring the trash receptacles... I called him and invited him up to see what we were planning on doing before we did anything. And I even asked if I should put it down a little at a time. He said it was all OK.

We drove past tonight and there is a LOAD of other stuff in the place mixed with our stuff now. Appliances, mattresses, etc.. I wonder if they think that it is ALL ours. It definitely isn't. At the curb tonight was a ton of furniture and mattresses - way more than the 10 cabinets that we put in the closet to be taken out.

I'm frustrated and sad with co-op living already :(

ETA: The co-op trash rules are that big things get put in the incinerator room. I requested further clarification from the super because I didn't want to put that huge bulky stuff out there if DH could help him put it on the curb. That's when I was told, "no, really big things go here..." and taken on the tour.... We didn't do any construction. The cabinets were falling off their hinges and had encrusted bugs in them. We unscrewed them. The sellers ripped pieces of furniture that were built into the wall units out and left gaping holes and missing molding. So this is on the same order and certainly not as obtrusive. The Board has our plans for the new kitchen cabinets already and I was told that submitting them is just a formality.

I totally hear where you are coming from! The super was probably trying to do you guys a favor and the building mgr didn't agree - or maybe that was the final straw. It stinks for you guys.

Do you know what day trash pickup is? I wonder if you can just buy some time and see if the garbage people take it. How often do they come?

The trash went out tonight. There was a LOAD of other stuff on the curb that was not ours. Mattresses, a dresser, rugs, mirrors, closet doors, and tons of black bags. I crushed a cabinet (they are that flimsy) and put it in a black bag and put it on the curb with the others. I plan on making DH do that on Friday and just bag it all. No way I'm getting a dumpster there before the weekend anyway and it's the holiday so I figure that buys some time perhaps. I just hope the bldg mgr is reasonable. The thing is, I don't think the bldg mgr even saw it - I think the super tattled, which is weird.
