Any have cedar shakes...and have them painted?

We had an estimate yesterday to clean and paint our cedar shakes. Some may have to be replaced becuase they are too soft, but for the most part he said they are not in bad shape.
The paint is OLD.....so it is chipped in alot of places and we are also looking at a darker color.

Please let me know how much you paid. Thanks. Chat Icon

we've never had ours painted... but the people who own our house before us did- and the paint is still chipping Chat Icon depending on how much your estimate was, you might want to look into getting vinal siding with the cedar shake look... because with all the grooves in the real cedar shake, it keeps chipping...

Same here, the previous owners painted and it's chiping, looks awful. We were going to repaint, but instead we are going to do siding next spring.

We have beautiful hand-split cedar shingles that are impossible to find nowadays. Unfortunately, previous owners painted them. Ours are chipping, etc., so we thought about having them scraped and repainted, but in the long run, we decided to just replace them with new pre-stained cedar shingles.

When we considered scraping & re-painting, I think my DH figured it would cost around 10K.

We had ours repainted 2 years ago and the paint is peeling off already. DH, who works with cedar shakes, said painting them is a horrible idea. Staining them or getting new ones prestained is the way to go.

really....?

I thought this way would save us some $ and buy us atleast 5-7 years before we have to re-side the entire house.

Now I am so unsure Chat Icon Chat Icon

it might buy you a couple years... but i don't think 5-7. i think its becasue of all of the grooves in the cedar wood that the paint just doesn't stick well.... we would have gotten new siding right away, but we planned to add on, so we were just gonna do all new siding once we added on... and now we decided to buy ILs house from them, so we're moving.... but even FIL who is VERY CHEAP said " well, whoever buys your house will probably just put on vinal siding" becasue the paint is chipping so bad... i think it might be worth it for you to just deal with the paint chipping and save up for new vinal siding....

Our house is cedar shakes. The first thing we learned is that you do NOT paint them!!! That is why they peel and chip and look bad after a few years... (as we saw from a neighbors house).

You need to stain them. They sell opaque stains in a variety of colors. My DH stained our house again in the front because the sun had faded it over the years. Although my house is a doody brown color, it looked so much nicer with a fresh coat of stain. He bought it at Home Depot and did it himself. Took him awhile Chat Icon but he got it done.

I've always heard not to paint cedar shakes. You can stain them with color stains. My friend just did that and it looks really nice.
If they are already painted though, you are going to have to repaint or side.Chat Icon

I believe the guy who came to give us an estimate is staining them with a product he raves about called floodpro. They have a variety of colors.
And yes, he did advise us that this would just be a band-aid to the situation and that eventually we need to re-side the entire house. Chat Icon
