I don't think he realizes what he is doing is annoying people. He's probably just not thinking when he speaks. Unfortunatly, there is not much you can do about it, unless you don't tell him whats wrong with you when you call out sick...

You're not overreacting. Just try to be as general as possible when you call in.

My manager is like this also. When my co-worker called out, he was having trouble speaking or something & my manager offered to call an ambulance to take him to the hospital. So he told a few people & by the end of the day everyone was saying, omg, did you hear that Anthony might have had a stroke? I thought it was funny that they all jumped to conclusions & he ended up only having a minor throat infection

A general 'the teacher isn't feeling well' should suffice.
