The Tudors...and how does it happen that...

Ok by now everyone knows what The Tudors is about, even if they don't watch (it's soooo easy on the eyes though Chat Icon )

so, my question to you is this..Henry VIII, King of England, divorced his wife, made an enemy of the Holy Roman Emperor, AND the Pope, and created an entirely new church and "religion" in England...all so he could marry another woman and have her bear him a male heir.

ok fine...

but he was so "in love" with her to do all of this....only to have her head cut off a mere 2 years after....

how does that happen....how does such arduous "love/infatuation" end up with a head being chopped off so soon after?

and this is a true story...and rings true often....I just don't get it.

I believe as much as you love someone, you can hate them as strongly, though you'd have to be off your rocker to have him/her beheaded.

He didn't only behead Anne Boleyn, he also beheaded Katherine Howard. And divorced Anne of Cleves. And cast aside Katherine of Aragon. He probably would have beheaded Katherine Parr too if he hadn't died first.
I think he was a sick man who was overly superstitious and was easily led by others..

Henry was flipping crazy-- he was in love with Anne and Katherine Howard-- but he was such an egotistical, maniacal narcissist he couldn't handle when things didn't go his way.

The things he did were unprecedented. He was like a little child that got bored of his new toy and wanted something new. He was brought up to think he could do no wrong and that his actions were the action and will of god-- no one opposed him, therefore he probably never really could comprehend right from wrong.

A little spin-off...

If you are into Tudor history, you should read Phillipa Gregory's historical fiction novels starting with The Other Boleyn Girl. I have been recommending these books for years and I believe that they are now making the movie Chat Icon

I don't really believe he was in "love" with anyone except for his own reflection. He was obsessed with Anne Boleyn because she wouldn't let him have her, but when she didn't give him a male heir and started miscarrying I'm sure he thought that he should cut his losses and move on. Besides, he had already "fallen in love" with Jane Seymour at that point.

I'm about 2 episodes behind on The Tudors...DH isn't interested so I only watch (and drool) when he's not around. I'm completely fascinated by Henry VIII.

Totally agree. I missed most of this weeks episode...DH won't watch - he says it is a "Renaissance soap opera" Chat Icon

Henry VIII was considered very athletic and tall...it wasn't until some injuries/illnesses that he packed on the weight. At least that's my understanding. He also was a redhead...this Henry VIII is not that either - nor is he tall Chat Icon

But he's easy on the eyes...

I think it was gout! Chat Icon Chat Icon that got him.

He said Jan Seymour was his only "true" wife...probably b/c she died before he could kill her.

I agree....especially about AB....she did what no one else did...she said NO.

She had the good sense to die in childbirth...and since that child happened to be a son, she did one better than everyone else.

Re: The Tudors...and how does it happen that...

From what I've read, Henry was pretty good looking when he was younger...it wasn't until he got older that he got fat.

And I've said it before...I am totally in love with Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Henry. Poor DH has to watch me swoon every time we watch the Tudors.
