Well, I guess I scared them
Because I've received 4 calls today from the Rehab center from various people, giving me various information, and assuring me that the Doctor handling my father's care will be calling me directly tomorrow, after he meets with my father, to discuss any remaining concerns.
Sometimes it pays to be a b!iatch
And to think, I didn't even have to pull the attorney card out yet

Good for you! Sometimes you need to stand up for what you deserve. And those litigation skills don't hurt either.

Great! whenever I am a beyotch to people on the phone my husband thinks I am acting like a lunatic - but then when we get results because of my ranting he's the last person to complain! sometimes you need to speak up in order to have your concerns heard!

Oh Beth
Sorry I've been MIA lately but I just caught your last two posts.
As you know, I can sympathize. Yes, it's unfortunate but you 100% have to stay on top of these places. This is the #1 reason why my brother and I have not placed my father in assisted living (well that and the $35,000 plus yearly price tag NOT covered by insurance ) because we would have to go there EVERY DAY to check up on him so why not have him live with my brother.
When my Dad was in the hospital there was one day that he needed to be changed (he was not capable of using the bathroom at that time). I had left for an hour to go to lunch and a much needed break only to find him still in that condition... well, I just snapped No, human being should have to be dirty for that long... talk about losing his dignity... so after asking nicely three times and waiting a few hours I blew up at the staff. It's unfortunate but you know what they say about the squeeky wheel and yes, you have to be a bit of a b iatch so they know who they MUST take care of.
To be honest, I'd non-chalantly drop the fact that you are an attorney into the next conversation you have with them... just drop it in in a friendly way... "Oh, so at my law firm today" They will get the hint. As a matter of fact I dropped a couple of names and professional affiliations around when I had to.
I'm sorry. It is very stressful and you are a GREAT daughter.

Glad they're getting their tushes in gear! I can't imagine how stressful it is to deal with a parent's health issue & incompetence.
I think you should give them a business card in case they need to get in touch with you.

Re: Well, I guess I scared them
That's great news! Good for you for demanding better.
Unfortunately I know the frustrations you're going through. I went through a lot of them myself when DH was in rehab. And the only way to get them to take better care of your loved one is to be a PITA and demand better care.
Very happy to hear things are better

Re: Well, I guess I scared them
Thank you thank you thank you everyone...
I guess I never realized just how pitiful care can be, and just how on top of it you have to be. It's even more noticeable because we went from one of the best hospitals in the Country, with just unbelievable, effortless care, to this
I just came back, and had to get on their case again about lowering his insulin because the amount they gave him put him in shock, but THANKFULLY, the night nurse who gives out the insulin, has a little crush on me, and agreed to just give my dad 6 units, instead of the 10 units that the incompetent doctor prescribed. And I "cajoled" him into cleaning, dressing and applying cream to my dad's bed sore, which had been unattended all day.
It's going to be a rough time, especially because my father just learned that the surgery didn't raise his heart efficiency enough to qualify for the transplant list. He is devastated, and to add injury to insult, he's in this center that he really doesn't want to be. I'm clinging to the hope that once we get him into a really nice, upscale independent living facility, his spirits will rise. Who knows, maybe he'll meet a new little twinkie in the city, as DH puts it

I think your dad can definitely find himself a twinky
I also definitely beleive that the environment has a big effect on his mood. Once he is somewhere better and upscale, he spirits will rise!!

Re: Well, I guess I scared them
I'm so sorry to hear what's going on. My brother is going to rehab soon and after that i don't know. It may just be a nursing facility..ugh!!
I've been cracking the whip too. I got the Cardiologist to stop the social worker from sending him to a nursing home right away. The rehab facilities are asking for special medical clearance and I wanted to let these facilities first get what they need before they just ship him off to the first bed available. I had to stop it.
This blows right?

It does, it really does, and even if your brother is sent to the BEST rehab facility on the planet, you still have to be on top of them because, unfortunately, the focus of these places is the rehab, and they are less informed about certain medical issues, like diabetes.
So, even when your brother is discharged, stay on top of EVERYTHING. Make sure whomever has power of attorney, checks his medical chart everyday to monitor what they are doing about his blood sugar, insulin and other medications. And MAKE SURE they are tending to his bed sores, if he has any, and are checking on a regular basis for new bed sores - this is one of the BIGGEST problems at nursing/rehab facilities, and one of the biggest causes of unnecessary complications. I can't tell you how many lawsuits we handled regarding that specific issue when I worked at a private law firm

My brother is most likely going to a hospital based rehab..for now. He needs the dialysis. But, the good news is his kidneys may be making a comeback! He has a bed sore that is healing now. They are turning him every 30 minutes to avoid aggravating it. I would like them to get him out of bed more.
I wish you and your dad luck with this. This is truly an experience that I did not volunteer for.
