Advice about Start date

So, I already have my new start date which was not going to allow me any time in between jobs - end on Fri. start on Mon. I ecided it would be godo to have at least one day off to decompress and organize before my new job. I called an asked to change the start date by one day - what reason should I give:

1) Lie and say I need to do something for my current job before leaving

2) just say I need the day to organize so i can strart fresh, etc.?

any other ideas - thank you!

Re: Advice about Start date

I always factor in a week or 2 between jobs....give you time to decompress from the old one and start fresh with the new one...and most likely you will not be taking any vacation time as soon as you start the new job, so take some time off.

Tell them you need to tie up some lose ends. Can be either personal or professional.

I would go the other way and leave my current job a day earlier instead of asking the new job to change the start date. I don't think it's a good way to start out at a new job.

Re: Advice about Start date

yep, once the start date is locked, the new place starts preparing for your arrival

try to change it now, and it won't look that good to them

try to get out of your old place early

Re: Advice about Start date

Good point, thanks everyone. Unfortunately, I had already asked when I posted this. I just said I had few loose ends to tie up, they understood but still need me to start on the 21st to overlap with someone. I could try to leave my current job earlier, but sort of feel bad doing that too (although I don't know why, I owe them nothing) - at this point I may as well just stay I guess. Oh well:(

I agree -- leave a day early from your old place. Stay committed to the new place and keep it honest.

That being said, I know how hard this is. I am practically doing the same thing -- my last day at this job is Friday and I start my new job on Tuesday. I'd love to take a week off but it just ain't happening.

Good luck!
