Since when is it ok to ask someone...
...how much money they make?
I gave notice last week and so far, 3 people have outright asked me how much money I made in my old postion/will make in my new position, and 4 others have alluded to it by asking "Is this a lateral move or a better opportunity?"
Since when is this ok?? One of the people who asked is my Mom (who is a busybody  ), which I dealt with tactfully, but to the others, I want to tell them it's none of their ***** business!
Geez. Do people have no class whatsoever?

My DH's family is ALWAYS in my business asking what I am making etc....I put them right in their place. We don't do that in my family

They are extremely jealous because they are stuck at the helll hole that you call an ex-employer.
I wondered this same thing when I was changing my job. Unfortunately, people are not as graceful as they used to be and people feel free to dig into personal matters that are none of their business.

I used to work in a law firm and that kind of info was talked about freely. I couldn't stand it. How much summer interns made was public info. How much everybody billed per hr was a part of common conversation.

Well, if it was a big law firm, that's because salary scales are public knowledge for the top 50-100 firms. Basically, anyone who knows how long I've been working at this firm can figure out how much money I make with a little sleuthing or the right legal online services subscriptions. All the big firms pay 1st - 7th year associates the same. (Meaning all 1st years make the same, all second years get the same, etc.)
The only chance for differences lies in bonuses, most of which are published as well.
I guess it helps recruiting, as it's a lawyers market.
Luckily, most people (non-lawyers) don't know how to find this all out!
Then there are just those lawyers who love, love, love to talk about how much they make and what toys they have. Disgusts me. I'll discuss it with certain colleagues b/c we're in the same boat, but not in front of anyone else.
I had someone (a nonlawyer) I work with ask me to give him the associate salary scale and the amount of the bonuses last year. Uh, NO!!!

Yes, same here.
I was raised never to do that so when MIL asks me (which is a lot-- any time I have ever had a job switch or a pay raise) I don't know what to say. I don't want to cause friction by getting pissy so I just try to be polite and say something to the affect of "oh, well it's a definite increase- which is great!" or "well, let's just say the raise is appreciated!!" ya know? 
She has actually gotten a little peeved in the past when I politely dodge the questions!! 
It's bad-- but some people think, for some reason, that it's OK to ask and it's really not.

Thanks chickies. It appears I'm not alone! 
With my Mom, I told her that my husband and I decided only to discuss financial details with each other. It's hard to argue that, because then you are asking me to go against what my husband and I decided together. That worked nicely.
But one of the coworkers who asked me for my "range" of salary asked because he feels he is underpaid, and wants to transition into my position after I'm gone. So he thinks he can make the same as me.
I reminded him that I had 2 years with the company before I was promoted, had another 2 years within our current department before I was promoted again (when he was hired), and have more education and experience than he does in our field.
That shut him up good. Because if he persisted, the next thing I was going to say was "You're not worth as much as I am, so stop asking."

This was a common topic of conversation at my old firm and no big deal since everyone was in the same boat or 1 - 3 years apart. Not to mention it was all published info. It still comes up at functions though since some people have gone in-house while others are still at the law firm. It's always assume that in-house means a huge paycut but my friends are finding that to be inaccurate.
In my current field at my 9 - 5 job nobody has asked and it's really not discussed. Every position has a "range" so you know that much but not exact salaries. My position was created so I am in a "salary band" with a huge range so nobody really knows what I make - nor do they ask.

I wouldn't really come right out and ask someone but DH and I are pretty open with friends if they ask what we make. Neither of us see the big deal if people know what we make. But we do have friends that are hush hush so we stay hush hush with them as well.

One of my coworkers just told me he is leaving, the amt. he makes here and what he will be making at his new job. He volunteered all of it, I wouldn't dare ask. However, months ago he left a bank statement and paystub on the copier here, so everyone knew how much he made. What's worse, he does NOTHING here, so since then everyone has been royally ****** off. That is one reason you should never say what you make. We're all glad he is leaving.
In general most people don't talk about how much they make or things cost like their house, car, etc. I have a different coworker that recently asked me how much my house was. I said I'd rather not talk about it. He said, it's nothing that I couldn't find out publically. What a loser. He has no tact.
