How should I respond to this e-mail?
I just recieved an e-mail from a parent telling me that her daughter started her period. Now, this is useful information since students need to go in pairs to use the bathroom, ask permission etc.
But the e-mail just said "____ started her period"
that's it. How should I responed? Just that I got it? That I'll try to be sensitive to her? I've never gotten an e-mail like this from a parent and wasn't sure how to respond appropriately. I put this on here to hopefully get parent perspective, as well as teacher. Thanks!

As a teacher, I would simply write back and say "Thanks for letting me know" or something simple along those lines.

Yep. Just a thanks for letting me know seems to suffice.

Geez, talk about a sensitive parent
I would respond back with:
Dear Mr. or Mrs. SoandSo, Thank you for your email. If there is anything I can do to make this sitaution easier to handle for your daughter, please let me know.
Or something to that effect.

Re: How should I respond to this e-mail?
Thanks for the suggestions... I was also a little confused at the bluntness of the e-mail... I expected something along the lines of "please allow her to use the bathroom as needed..." or something. Though, it was unsigned, so maybe it was just Dad not knowing what else to write

Thanks.
Now, am I expected to educate her on what that means, or can you handle it?

Ask them if they want you to share your tampons or something? What the heck were they telling you?

Luckily, we already taught sex ed in december. Our 5th grade girls are fully versed in periods, how to use tampons, and all about the s-e-x Well, the basics at least. That was a good time.
Man... I would have been mortified if my teachers knew when I got my period

Re: How should I respond to this e-mail?
Since her language is so casual, maybe she meant to send it to someone else?
I agree with the other posters -- a thanks for telling me, and I will be extra sensitive to her needs, etc. is good.

Re: How should I respond to this e-mail?
I think what you wrote in your original post is perfect - thanks for letting me know and i will be sensitive to her needs.
it does seem very blunt - but who knows what happened? maybe she pressed send before being finished? maybe it was the dad? or maybe she was in a rush and wrote it quickly w/o really thinking it through.
