Freddy is a Froot Loop
At least I can somewhat laugh about some of the stuff that is coming out of his mouth.
He's 60% lucid most of the time. He asked about his boat and tractor today. Um..boat?...TRACTOR!
Ok..he's got a bit to go yet.
Good news is that I saw one of his kidney docs and he said that there definitely is a chance his kidneys could come back. He's had a lot more output. His numbers are still high.
I saw a rehab place today and cried as I left. These places are nursing homes. If he wasn't on dialysis he could go to places that are more rehab oriented. this blows. These places do rehab, but he needs intense rehab.
They still won't let him eat or drink though. He's so thirsty. I will call first thing in the am to talk to the speech and swallow therapist. Poor guy.

Re: Freddy is a Froot Loop
your such a good sister-
I remember when my Mom came out of a 2 week coma- she asked about her navigator- she decided she wanted a candy apple red one
we have no idea where that came from- when she got out of the hospital my Dad even took her to test drive one- but it was too big for her

A tractor, huh?
Are there hospitals that provide intensive rehab? I want to say my uncle's step daughter used to do PT at NYU.
Good luck with your search

You're doing a great job. I can't imagine how hard this must be for you. I hope his kidney doctors give you better news as you go on. I have a special bond with them as I spent a week at SF with my kidney troubles last June.

I talked to Dr. Rubel today. He is partners with Dr. Barou.
It's hard. Seeing your loved one not all there is trying to say the least.

Re: Freddy is a Froot Loop
Please look into Burke Rehabilitation Center( in white Plains)- I was there for 5 or 6 weeks after a horrific car accident ( 2 surgeries on my leg) didn't walkk for a year. They even let dh stay over in my room on the weekends-( when we were dating) in a cot of course
I saw miracles coming out of that place. The staff was incredible, I can't even tell you what I owe to those people.
COntinued recovery to your brother, you have been an amazing sister through all of this. Please feel free to FM me if you have any questions.

I would love him at Burke. They don't have on site dialysis. That's the killer. He will have such a better recovery and quicker if a place like that had it.
I am going to talk to the social worker tomorrow about the prospect of sending him out for dialysis. I know it's not the best scenario, but maybe it would work.

I hope that they can work something out. The other Rehab place I heard was really good is Rusk in NJ I believe. Not sure about the dialysis onsite though. I really hope Burke can set something up- keep us posted! Good luck and continued support for you, your brother and your entire family.

My father gets discharged to rehab tomorrow, and I'm so nervous about the rehab facility, because he's also on dialysis
Hopefully our fears are irrational ones, and rehab is the next step to full-recovery... and, hey, if Freddy is still thinking about his tractor and boat, his spirits must still be fairly high!

When you're on dialysis, and/or your kidneys aren't functioning properly, you have to be very careful about your fluid intake because your body can't excrete the fluid like a normal, healthy person, so what happens is the fluid builds up like a toxin in your body, and can cause a whole slew of really nasty side effects (you don't want me to get into details), and then what happens is they have to remove extra fluid during dialysis, which will cause your blood pressure to drop dangerously.
So, anyone on dialysis has to be on a restricted liquids... which is really unfortunate for diabetics, because a symptom of diabetes is thirst

We live in the Philly suburbs so the case worker is trying to get him placed in a MossRehab center that is literally 5 minutes from our home. I just found out, though, that they probably don't have dialysis on-site, so they're going to have to arrange for him to be transported to a dialysis center that's about a mile away. I never realized how complicated this can be...

I know, I only have a few places he can go for it on site. I will see another facility this week. There are only two others that can accommodate him in our area and they are not that close. I fear that no one will visit him.

Re: Freddy is a Froot Loop
I just called the nurse practitioner to find out why he can't eat or drink yet. he's so thirsty..it's breaking my heart. And yes, he is diabetic as well.
I urged her to have him re-assessed again to find out whether he can drink or not.
One of the rehab places can't take him. Down to one more. I hope it's not a sh!thole!
