BF & hospital schedules

I am reading the What to expect for the baby, and I read a little bit about the BF info/advice. One thing she mentions is if you are "serious" about BFing that you should have the nurses in the hospital bring you the baby every time it is hungry, rather than have them give your baby a bottle in the nursery & let you sleep overnight. Although I can understand her rationale for this, especially for 1st time moms who might take a little more time & effort to BF effectively, is this a reasonable thing to expect from the nurses?

If any BDTD moms from Winthrop have any experiences or suggestions, please feel free to share....I am now concerned that I might take longer to get a good latch from my baby if they switch back & forth from me to a bottleChat Icon

Re: BF & hospital schedules

I don't know about WInthrop but most hospitals will accomodate you - North SHore the baby stays in your room so you can BF whenever the time is right.

YOU decide what you want to do and how. Make a birth plan and include that information. If you don't want them to bring you the baby at night, make that clear. Also know that the bittle is MUCH easier than the breast so if baby gets one try of the bottle may not want to work for the breast...

One thing my nurses told me in the hospital-they are there to accomodate you. With my DD she was exclusively BF. Sh ewas with my most of the time and the nurses bought her to me when she was hungry. I found this to be helpful so I wasnt in shock when I got home without the benefit of their help.
My BF went through withdrawl. She got so used to the nurses doing so much during her C-section recovery.

Re: BF & hospital schedules

Yes that is right. Also you can have them put a little note in the nursery where the baby will sleep in the hospital that says "Please do not give any formula or water". I am reading a really good Breastfeeding book, I forgot the name of it that gives you all the details on this. It is really informative. Teh nurses should bring the baby to you every 3 hours for feedings.

Re: BF & hospital schedules

Thank you for your replies ladies. I was worried b/c I know the rooms at Winthrop are shared, and I was not certain if that would present a problem.

Well..at Winthrop the babies are with you most of the day when there are not regular visiting hours. THey are only in the nursery then for a few hours when general visiting hours are going on and if you are BF and the baby is hungry you can go into the nursery and feed the baby. The baby is with you for a few more hours after the hours are over and then they bring the baby to you every 2-3 hours during the night. They even told me that my little angel was hungry and wanted me so they are used to it. It says BF babies on the bassinette and you can request no bottles, pacifier or water.

I was very adamant about that! I wanted a good latch from the beginning and I BF for 14 months!

I haven't given birth yet, but took a breastfeeding class just last night with their lactation consultant (it was at my Dr's office, but the same lady teaches it at the hospital too). This lactation consultant is on duty at the hospital M-F, 8-4. Of couse, there are births, questions, etc. while she's not on duty, but she says there are others there trained in lactation that will help, and all nurses have training in it (basics, I'm sure, but it's something!)

As for breastfeeding during the night: she said the same thing other ladies have said. You make it known that you want your baby brought to you when he/she is hungry, and they will do it, round the clock (if that's what you want)....if you'd rather have some sleep, you can tell them that and they'll bottle feed them once while you sleep. I'm thinking she said the same about pacifiers too, you can say you don't want them used, etc. She said baby can sleep in the room with you or in the nursery, your choice (but has to be in nursery during general visiting hours).

Think that's about it. I recommend taking the class, it was helpful. I can give you info if you'd like it!

ETA: Her view, actually she quoted some medical association I don't recall, is that if you want to breastfeed, try to not use bottles or pacifiers for the first 4 weeks (2 weeks minimum), to establish proper technique. Of course, every baby/mom is different, but that's what they recommend.

My son was born at Winthrop 3 yrs ago. The nurses were all wonderful, except the nursery staff. They gave me a very hard time. When I told them my son was to have no bottles they were really b**chy. I won't go into it. BUt it is your right and your baby. YOu are the mommy and what you say goes. They just have to deal in my opinion. Do what is best for you.

Re: BF & hospital schedules

I delivered at Winthrop last year and will again in July.

For the night feedings they give you slip for each night you are their and you check off which feedings you want the baby brought to you.
For breastfeeding it is 12am, 3am, 6am and then at 9am is when they bring you the baby for the day.
For Formula it is 1am and 5am.

If the baby is hungry before the time they will bring you the baby. The first night I was their I checked off all 3 times for BF and it was difficult for me at night. When I rang for the nurse to bring the baby back at 3, I told her not to bring him to me at 6 to just give him a bottle and she said no problem. The next night I choose ff and he was crying so much that they brought him to me at 12:30 so I BF first then I gave him formula. I found they were very accomidating. The only thing is that their are no LC nurses on durning the night and that is why I felt it was very challenging at night. Not to mention my DS had some difficulty latching on. I also had a private room, so I didnt mind if he cried a little while we were trying to get situated.

Re: BF & hospital schedules

I gave birth at Withrop and exclusively BF. They had it written on my chart and just brought her in every 2 hours during the night. She didn't get any bottles in the hospital, except the day we went home a few hours before because she was jaundice and the doctor recommended it (she didn't get any nipple confusion). The poor thing was crying just about every time they rolled her in because she was so hungry and my milk hadn't come in yet, but they didn't have any problems with it.

I delivered at st charles.....they were great and brought her when she was hungry ( I left her in the nursery the first night since i had been up the night before from 1-5 in labor, then delivered her, then had everyone come up to visit!) ....i was happy to see her when they brought her to me, after that I had her in my room at night and they would "collect" her during the common visiting hrs and when the pedciatricians did rounds but otherwise she was with me... we were lucky she was a good baby from the start too....if you have specifici questions, you can fm me if you want! I delivered at Manhasset and I didn't have her room with me (my roommate's DH stayed over and her crying bothered him Chat Icon ) but the nurses brought her to me several times during the night to try to feed. They were really nice and very supportive of breast feeding.

Yes, DH just told me I shouldn't have told that story, it would scare people. The nurses were great, and he was my only complaint. lol When my son was born I had no complaints at all. The nurses were so responsive and never made me feel like I was asking a stupid question either time.

I gave birth at NYU- but I did this. It is a common request. Every 3 hour they would bring her to me and wake me up. DD never had forumula. She just turned one and transition from breastmilk to cow's milk.
