Another window question

we really need to replace our old aluminum windows...

Is it better to call a company to do it all, or buy the windows ourselves and hire a contracter?

Is there really much difference between Anderson windows and the windows from places like Alpha or Unified?

I know this has been discussed, but when I did a search waaaaaaaaaay to many off topic posts came up

Our house has vinal replacement windows. They were replaced about 8-10 years ago....and I already see them sperating from the sills.

Personally I think that Anderson windows are best....we will be replacing the windows in the next few years....because instead of fitting the windows in the space that you have (in the case of replacements windows)...the walls are ripped open and the windows are made part of the house (does that make sense?) making them more weather proof.

I just replaced all my windows with new Anderson's. I didn't price out buying myself Vs. a contractor. But because I used a contractor I did get his discount at Windowrama. I was told to expect to pay 300-400 per window installed and that was pretty much what my windows came in at. Maybe go to a place like Windowrama, price the windows then call some contractor to just install.

The price of the windows will all depend upon the size and shape. We had to get a custom large window which was $$. We priced them out at a few places and found that most of the window places recommend 3-4 contractors...all said that it didn't matter if you ordered it yourself or if the contractor ordered it as far as price went.

Personally, I think there is a huge difference between Anderson or Pella and other less expensive windows. We have all Andersons and the new custom is a Pella. If you go to the window stores you can see for yourself...they have displays of the different windows that they sell.

We had Anderson windows installed 2 years ago by our contractor. It cost about $7,000 for 9 windows but it was so worth it as it lowered our oil bill.

Let me add that we don't plan to be in this house for more than 5 years...

also, most of the windows that need to be replaced are those high, short, wide sliders..

has anyone replaced those?

Andersens in standard sizes(yours probably are standard sliders) are not THAT much more per window & they are better in everyway including resale value.
A couple of years ago my DH took an Andersen window from the 1920's out of a house in Bellmore & it still worked perfectly! Our house has Andersens that are 17 years old & they are much less drafty than the new aluminum replacement windows in my townhouse. I had to put clear plastic on the ones in the kitchen so the wind wouldn't blow in.

I'm not sure about buying then yourself, most contractors get a good discount, but there's no guarantee they'll extend it to you.
The average Andersen in Home Depot is about $120
