Those who moved out of state...
Did you buy right away or rent first?

We made an offer in November 2004, closed Mid January, moved late January.
I dont think I would do it the same way again though, think I would rent for a while.

Re: Those who moved out of state...
Since I lived in a different state before, I would only advise to rent first.
Find out about the area you want to live in, good towns, bad areas, schools, commutes, etc...

Re: Those who moved out of state...
also wanted to add...we bought in nov, closed in dec...and DH moved down in April...then I moved in in August after our wedding.
If you don't have time to look around beforehand then I would rent for a few months
our friends that moved down from NY just bought a house but they rented since oct...the sellers are paying their last months rent and they move in the house in May

Re: Those who moved out of state...
my DH had taken a new job in NJ and we didn't have time to buy before he started the job so we rented for a few months while we were looking for a place to buy. we started renting in the end of april, went into contract in July, and closed sept. 30. we ended up paying a penalty for breaking our lease early, but it was definitely good to rent because we were really able to get a better feel for the area and what neighborhoods we liked.

Re: Those who moved out of state...
Depends on where you are moving to. We are eventually moving back to where I grew up so I already knew the areas I wanted to be in.
If you are moving to a brand new area I would suggest renting for 6 months - 1 year.

Re: Those who moved out of state...
Thanks for the advice girls.
We're moving to south florida and it's so tempting to buy now... there are so many amazing properties that we can afford. But, we looked at some rental properties online last night and it's just amazing what you can get... everything is so new and gorgeous. So I think we're going to rent for 7-12 months first!!

Re: Those who moved out of state...
I think renting is a good idea. The only reason we bought a house off the bat is because we have family in the area that aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
Best of luck!! When are you planning to leave?

Re: Those who moved out of state...
My girlfriend and her DH just made the same move, from NY to South Florida and they are renting in a beautiful townhouse community in Boca Raton. If you want information on it I am sure I can get it for you.
I too would recommend renting first so that you can feel out where you really want to be located.
Good Luck!

Re: Those who moved out of state...
We rented for about 6 months, then bought a house. Try to get a short term lease if you can - it was difficult to get out of our apartment lease when we found the house. I would definitely recommend renting first though, for the reasons above - commute, schools, etc.
Good luck!!

Re: Those who moved out of state...
We rented for a year to decide where we wanted to live for a while. I think it was the BEST thing we did. Got to know the area and not be stuck into something we found we didn't care for in the end. Not so much the house, but area. good luck!

Re: Those who moved out of state...
Thanks girls!
Yea we just love it down there and it helps that we have tons of family and friends already in the area.
We plan on leaving mid-May. We're going down the weekend of April 20th for a wedding and also to look at apartments, etc.
Most of the apartments we looked at last night had 6 or 7 month lease options... so that'll work!

we are going to also- part of me would rather rent - but I just can't stomach renting
by the way in FL and other places- you don't need to put down a huge security deposit- my brother only had to put down $500 - for a $1300 a month apartment
I had to give 2 months for my current place

Oh I know! We are getting our huge security deposit back on our current apartment and will only have to use about $300 of it for security on an apartment in FL!!
