Taxes After An Addition
does anyone know approx how much your taxes go up per square feet after an addition? i want to connect my house and garage and the space inbetween is about 150 square feet and expand my kitchen about 30 feet. I had a contractor tell me that the taxes go up $2.50/sq feet of living space (different for a room). Can anyone who has additions done tell me about this? I am not ready to throw money into this to have plans drawn up just yet b/c i really want to know how much taxes first. I know the town gives estimates once you submit the plans.

I would call the town and ask. They will be able to give you the most accurate response.

Re: Taxes After An Addition
I'm in town of Islip. I was advised to request an estimate of taxes as soon as you have construction plans. The town sends you the forms and you complete it and return it with a copy of the architect's drawings. The town will then provide estimated taxes.
Of course, we never did this. The construction moved so fast and I got crazed, so it's going to be a big surprise!

Re: Taxes After An Addition
We actually requested an estimate without the plans. You can fill out an paper with approximate square footage, etc. and they will provide you with an estimate.
We are in the middle of adding a floor on our house which is about 900 square feet, and also adding central air. The estimate was for another $1500 in taxes. Of course, I'll have to wait and see what the actual was. My neighbor told me you can apply to have the additional taxes spread out over seven years, so we're going to apply for that too.
We're in Islip town.

thanks! i will look into the estimate from the town wthout plans.
and also, i have also heard of the tax over 7 years for new additons. it's something like, first year you pay no tax increase, year two 15% of the tax increase, year 3, 25% increase etc until you reach the correct tax 7 years later.

Re: Taxes After An Addition
The house that Danielle and I bought in levittown has this done to it. We have a levitt cape, and the past owner had the breezeway between the kitchen and the garage filled in and we now have an extended kitchen.
Im not sure about the taxes. You would have to call the town.
I dont think it will go up that much, because you are not changing the actual footings of the house. If you were building out or back on the first floor then your taxes would go up a lot more
