Utilities **Budget Plan**
What is this, exactly?
How do I get et up with something like that, instead of their estimate?
My friend just got a $900 gas bill, becaus eKeyspan said- Oops- we read your meter, and based on our estimate, you haven't been paying enough.
That scares me.

We have oil - $180/month for budget plan
Electric - $150/month
Water - we just got a bill for $80 for the last few months b/c they charge a $40 start up fee for all new customers, otherwise it would have been $40 instead.
Talk with the utility companies and ask for a budget plan - this way you won't get any surprises and will always know what your monthly bills are.

When you call to get the final meter reading before closing, I would ask customer service them what is available for payment options. They'll be able to help you then!

i just asked about this when transfering my account.
the csr told me that it's best to live in the house for about six months before you set it up. the reason being: the previous owner/tenant doesn't necessarily have the same living patterns as you. your family may be bigger/smaller than theirs.

So how do they determine my bill for the first 6 months?
I know they don't come on site and read the meter like- ever.

You still need final meter readings taken on all houses. Ours was vacant as well, but the heat was on, so oil and water were being used, so you need the current owner to be responsible for the costs of keeping the house functioning until you take sole possession. The meter readings are usually taken the day of closing. You just have to call LIPA and the Suffolk Water Authority, and since the house is Gas, also call Keyspan.

You can request meter reading cards. They will mail to you and you call them every month for an actual reading.
As far as balanced billing, as someone else posted, it's best to have at least 6 months of YOUR usage, otherwise, you'd be paying based on previous owner.
We do budget and the bills still do fluctuate. Not much but they do change based on our usage or cost of gas.

That scares me.
That just happened to us two days ago. Keyspan was 800 and Lipa was 750. It pizzes me off to no end. I am going to start calling in the readings bc I find that they are not reliable when it comes to collecting them.
