My Jersey girls...

There's a minimal chance that I'll be relocating to NJ within a year or more (work related). Can you guys give me the ballparks on some stuff, like what some areas are like (I have a friend in Clifton and to me, it's too urban for me - need a little more countryChat Icon ), prices of homes, taxes, etc.?

Thanks!

Re: My Jersey girls...

I grew up in New Jersey, and I don't know what prices are like for the most part, though I can tell you a bit about areas.

What part of NJ would you want to live in? Do you or DH need to commute to the city?

If you want something less urban than Clifton but close to the city, take a look at Montclair. It's a really lovely town, though I think it's pricey. Millburn is another great choice. Maplewood is nice too, though it may be closer to Clifton than not.

The Edison/Colonia/Woodbridge area is supposed to be reasonable, but it's too congested for my taste. Metuchen is kind of nice, and it's also in the Central NJ area.

I love Bridgewater, but it's on a stinky train line if you commute. I would think the prices there are still not bad, and the schools used to be great. Summit is also beautiful, but very pricey.

If you can move anywhere, you may want to check out towns near the Delaware Water Gap close to the PA border. Prices should be lower out there.

FM me if you have questions!

I grew up in NJ too--what area are you thinking about? I grew up in central NJ, which is more rural than the northern areas, but a longer commute to NYC if that's where you will be working. I LOVED where I grew up, and the direct train to NYC was actually 40 mins. It was a pricey area though.

Re: My Jersey girls...

FH and I just relocated to NJ and we are closing on our house in Morris County. The prices varies so much from Northern Jersey all the way down to Souther Jersey. I know in Morris County, it'll be hard to find a 3bd, 2ba house in mint++ condition for less than $500K in most good areas with good school districts. Bergen county is out of this world expensive to us (same house would cost at least $600+). Some parts of Passaic County, Middlesex County are good. These are the only area that I'm familiar with. One of my friend got a townhouse in Sayrville, Middlesex County for $325K and it's gorgeous in a gated community. One thing you have to be VERY, VERY careful when house hunting in NJ is the flooding problem. Make sure you ask the homeowner or the agent if there's a flood insurance for the prospect house, if there is, the house is 100% in the flood zone.

Re: My Jersey girls...

We are currently on the market for a house in NJ. It all really depends on what your price range is and what your priorities are. For us it is all about commute to NY for DH, commute for me to Parsiappany, and good schools for our future children. We started looking in Bergen. Some areas we targeted were Franklin Lakes, Ridgewood, and Wyckoff. We then looked at homes in Essex county such as Livingston and West Orange. It looks like we have decided on Millburn/Short Hills and we currently have an offer in on a house and our fingers are crossed.

Good Luck!

Re: My Jersey girls...

a previous poster recommended Montclair, Millburn,Maplewood area... I live in that area, and while they are all really nice towns with very quaint "downtown" areas, they are located in Essex County which is known to have some of the highest taxes in NJ. We are about to go through a re-evaluation in my town and we already pay $15k in taxes so we're kind of freaking out about that! Chat Icon

West Orange/Livingston, although they are also in Essex County, the taxes are lower and it's also a very nice area.

Do you know where in NJ you would be working or what kind of price range you'd be looking in? I think then we could make better suggestions. I live in central jersey in the princeton area and we love it here. I think if I remember correctly from previous posts that's where nov04libride is referring too also. there are a lot of nice areas in central jersey that are more affordable especially if you don't need to be near a train line to commute to nyc. i live in kendall park (south brunswick township) and you can find farm land and preserved land areas, but at the same time you're minutes from great shopping and things to do.

Yes! I grew up right near Princeton. LOVED the area (I prefer it to Long Island). I was in Mercer County.

I grew up on LI and I prefer this area too! There are only 2 things I don't love about it here: our family is still on LI and the beach is kind of far away. Growing up I practically lived at the beach so I miss it a lot. Chat Icon We're looking to sell our townhouse and buy a house and are planning to stay somewhere in the general Princeton area.

Re: My Jersey girls...

following the thread of nov04libride and BabyInMarch... i love the princeton area.

i grew up on the other side of the country, i then lived in the city for some years (although i'm a nyc native). i moved to somerset in 04. i met dh in 05. we live in mercer county, i work in princeton. I LOVE THIS AREA!!!!!

we're "under contract" for our house. our taxes will be about $5500 for a two-bedroom ranch, with a lot of extras.

my mom lives in hackensack.... too over-crowded for me!

if you don't have to be that close to the city, this is a wonderful place!

oh oh, we got married in princeton last year.... wow, what a place Chat Icon

Re: My Jersey girls...

my SIL moved from West Orange to Parsippany (Lake Hiawatha) because the taxes are much more affordable. I love her new town.

My old boss lived in Allentown which is a country sort of town.Very cute and quaint. It is rather far from the GW so not sure how close you want to be...
