Re: Can you...

I'm sure you can ask. It seems to be a trend to request c-sections for convenience. My doctor would never do one just bc I wanted one. She'll only do it if it was medically necessary.

My back surgeon told me it may be best for me to have a c-section, actually necessary if they can't do an epidural, because I can't labor naturally with a spinal fusion, way too painful. He said if I can have an epidural, then the vaginal birth was up to me but he said the anesthesiologist was really the final decision maker.

Re: Can you...

Why would you request a c-section? just curious...not trying to judge.
I thought they were a lot more painful to recover from.

Re: Can you...

I think c-sections should only be performed out of necessity (baby is in distress, baby is too big to pass, women not progressing in a timely fashion), I know at one point in the labor process I said to my doc "forget ti, I want a c-section" and she laughed and said "honey that is not an option for you",
It should never be an elective alternative, it is major surgery, I know the AAob/gyn frowns upon that type of practice. why do you want one?

I am sure you CAN request one, but who knows if your doctor would do one! And the woman you were speaking to probably did have some type of issue that allowed the doctor to do the section. I mean, I don't know many insurance companies that would approve a medically unnecessary surgery.

I think a lot of women (not speaking about the OP or anyone in general) want to have c sections these days b/c that is what people in hollywood do. That being said, a c section is SURGERY and you have to recover from it as such!

Re: Can you...

I am pretty sure some Dr's will do it and others are against it...based on their own professional opinions

I do not actually know if I want one. I was just curious if you can request one. If this baby does grow to be about 8-10lbs. it will be very difficult for me to deliever since I am not even 5 feet.

That isn't really true. My cousin is under 5 ft and is VERY tiny and she delivered two healthly 9 lb babies without any problems. No one even thought to discuss a section with her. Your size vs. the baby's size doesn't really make a difference. There can be other contributing factors, but usually the weight or size of the baby isn't one of them.

Edited b/c I can't spell this morning

definitely don't worry about your size s. the baby, it is all about shoulder width, but the docs can still maneuver the baby to get him/her out. I am small as well as delivered an 8lb without any problem, in fact, sh ewas my easist labor and delivery out of my 3 kidsChat Icon

In due time. No pun intended.

Re: Can you...

I do not know whether insurance would cover an elective C-section.

I need one b/c of prior surgery. I've told people and they definitely thought that I was just making an excuse to have one. The truth is that I have already gotten 3 doctors opinions to make sure that a C-section is really necessary for me.
