This is such crap. Sprint tried to do the same thing to me. I called the day before the contract was up and told the service rep that I wanted to cancel, but was afraid if I waited until after the date, they would charge me for the next month. so she said she would put down that the contract should be cancelled at midnight, the day I spoke to her. I too got $150 bill for cancellation. I tried calling and could never get through, I sent a letter via certified mail and never got a response until I called one night at like 2am. I had to argue with the rep and then talk to a manager to get it removed and he acted like he was doing me a favor 
I now use a pre-pay phone
