question about paint
Stupid question, I know, but how do you determine how much paint you'll need? Do you measure the walls? I know we will only need 1 coat because:
living room: peach-tan dining room: peach-red/tan bedroom: peach-gold bathroom: mint green-sage green
Just curious so we can set aside that money now. DH and I were just trying to calculate our repair costs (which are minimal).
Also, how much is a can of BM and how much is can of Behr's? I know everyone here is BM crazy, but I've also heard Behr's is good to. Thanks Kerry

Re: question about paint
I know Benjamin Moore covers well....(we used it) so most of our rooms only needed one gallon. Except our LR. We needed one gallon of primer and two gallons of paint.
Editted.......cost is about $40 per can of BM I believe.

Re: question about paint
not sure...never been to ACE or Aboffs. I would look out for a sale.
We are into shopping locally and so we buy them at our local Tru Value hardware store in town.

Re: question about paint
I don't remember the paint being that expensive...closer to $28-32 a gallon.
Usually one gallon of prime, one gallon of color, one gallon for ceiling and a quart for trim would cover plenty. Depends, of course, on the size of your rooms. I would take the sq footage with you to the store and ask questions - I found the people at Aboff's to be very helpful.
I have yet to see a sale on BM paint.

Re: question about paint
Just a caution, you may need more than one coat, not because of the colours, but if the sheetrock is oler & dry it will suck up the paint like a sponge. Usually if you tell the clerk at the paint counter the dimensions & the number of windows, they can give you a pretty good estimation.

Re: question about paint
I get my BM paint from Aboffs and i believe i pay around $25 for a gallon. I've used 1 gallon of paint in most rooms.
However if you're not sure, get 2 cans because the paint can differ slightly. What i mean is if you get paint one day and then you get another can a different day... the shade can differ. So just be careful of that.

I painted a small bedroom, one coat, and used about a half a gallon. it goes on really nicely.

Re: question about paint
Aboff's ocassionally does have sales. They usually are on the cover of the local Pennysaver or that local free paper.
When we were painting our entire house last year (ugh... nine weekends straight ) they had a sale in early January right after the holidays. I guess that is their slow time, people recovering from the holidays and who has money after holiday shopping for paint?
I had to buy over 22 gallons of paint for my interior (colors only, not including ceiling and trim ) but the sale was something like 10-20% off a can so we saved a lot of $$$.
BTW: When I went to pick it all out, because of the amount I was buying and I was dressed in my painting gear, the guys there thought I had an account
The key to a good paint job is in careful prep work and really good brushes.

I would have to agree with you the Ralph Lauren paint went on so smooth and I did not even use a whole can for one room

Re: question about paint
I just bought BM pain from True Value this weekend - it was 30.99 for a gallon on Flat. I got the eggshell finish and it was 36.99.
FOr my ceiling paint I got it from Home Depot and got Behrs - the are about 15.00 cheaper.
