Does anyone have a cat?
What are you going to do when the baby is born? Will you keep that cat out of the babys room?

Re: Does anyone have a cat?
We have a cat and we absolutely plan on keeping him when the baby is born. My FIL actually sent me something on a cover he found for cribs that keep cats out of them. We will keep him out of the nursery when we are not home. He's pretty disinterested in children so I'm not too worried about how he'll be with the baby.

Re: Does anyone have a cat?
My son was born last week and we have a cat. I was a nervous wreck about bringing Bryan home. We walked in, my cat sniffed him, walked around him all night and that was it. Doesn't even want to be bothered. (Im kind of happy about that). We give equal attention to both and we keep all bedroom doors closed.

Re: Does anyone have a cat?
I'm going to see how the cats react to the baby before I try to figure out what to do. My older cat is 16....he could care less about anything but sleeping, eating and throwing up. My other cat is 2....and she's been hanging out in the nursery lately...so that might be trouble. she's sweet though, and terrified of everything that moves.

Re: Does anyone have a cat?
we too just plan on closing our cat out. My only concern is that DH hates getting cat hair on his clothes, so when he moved in here 7 months ago we started closing our BR door, and our cat has resorted to sleeping in my brother's room, which will be being converted to the nursery w/i the next 1-2 months. I am only concerned that he is so used to that room he'll want to go in there.

We have a cat...we plan on just seeing how it goes. Right now, the nursery has been under construction so he hasn't gone in there at all. He mostly chills on the couch or on our bed, so I am hoping when the baby comes home, he will sniff him/her and then be done with the baby! I am keeping my fingers crossed, but he really is a harmless kitty

Re: Does anyone have a cat?
I do! I have 2 actually. My girl, Suki shouldn't be an issue at all- she'll just stay away. I am worried about my boy. I'm worried he'll lay across the baby. Deisel has a habit of laying across peoples head/necks when they're sleeping. I always found it a comfort, but realized one night that a 9 pound neckwarmer could be dangerous
My parents immediately jumped at the chance to take him (he's such a love ), but I couldn't do that to him. SO- we're getting that contraption that goes over the crib, and both cats will be banished from the bedrooms.

Re: Does anyone have a cat?
We have two cats - and per the vet's suggestion we will just keep them out of the baby's room while it is in the crib. She told us not to get the netting as she said that cats often get injured when they try to jump in the crib then they get caught in the netting. She suggested for the safety of the baby and the cats we just keep them out of the room when the baby is in the crib.

Re: Does anyone have a cat?
we have 5 , the first few days they were like what is that, especially when the baby cried but after a week they could care less!!!!!!
edited to say, the bedroom doors are always closed, even before the baby, so th e cats know they are not allowed in there.

This made me laugh out loud!!!
I have a spoiled brat - he's 11 - he is a nosy little cat too and is going to want to be all over the baby stuff - so naturally, we are going to keep him away from everything and make sure to gove him lots of attention. He's a little attention whore

Re: Does anyone have a cat?
We have a cat but she has no concept of territory and she's declawed so we're good. She doesn't even jump anywhere. She does sleep in our bed so we don't let DS cosleep - that's staying hers.
Oh we also both were allergic to cats so we hope ds won't be. Before he arrived we shampooed all the carpets and we don't let cat hair build up (we never did b/c of our allergies). We also wash our cat with baby wipes 1-2 times a week as a bath.

Re: Does anyone have a cat?
I never restricted my cats and honeslty they never bothered with my daughter and now they can't get far enough away from her since she loves chasing them. My one cat loves to sleep in the glider and in the beginning we caught my other cat in the pack n play a time or two but really for the most part they just didn't care that much.

I have 2 cats and I found that they would rather DIE than be near to a real life human baby! They never go in his room and I do keep the door closed!!

See my concern is that my two fur babies are very snuggly and always want to cuddle - I am afraid they will jump in the crib and think the baby is for snuggling.

Re: Does anyone have a cat?
With my first I had 2 rather territorial cats who already claimed the room as their own. So, during the day [except for naps], I let the cats wander in [but kept a close eye on the crib]...at night [as soon as dinner was served] I would shut the door and it stayed that way until morning. It worked well. I was afraid that if I didn't let them in some of the day, they would do things to the "invader" during the day if I had my back turned.

Re: Does anyone have a cat?
I'm not worried. My guy is very small due to illness and will not get bigger. He can't make the jump into the crib. As long as I don't put another piece of furniture directly next to it, he can't get up there. Plus, he snuggles with me at night and never anywhere else or with anyone else. DH gets to deal with the dog.

cats tend to HATE children and their tiny grubby hands. i also think the smell repulses them [you know, that lovely "baby" smell that we all love...] my cats would creep up, sniff her [baby] and scrunch up their faces and run the other way...it was comical.

My cats are snuggly with us also...but babies move, make noise, try to pull their tails etc...
If you are worried about them going into the babies room, simply close the door!!!

Re: Does anyone have a cat?
Beemer was my baby for 2 years before I had Molly. To help her transistion I made sure I let her smell everything that was new. I put up the bassinet, crib, swing etc...up before Molly arrived. It helped her get used to the changes. Beemer wanted very little to do with Molly. She was VERY upset that I was in the hospital and away from her for 5 days. The crying from the baby made her very nervous. I never really banded her from a room..that would have made her want to go in it even more. She never tried to jump into the crib or bassinet with Molly in it. She wanted to avoid the baby as much as possible. Because she was so stressed out I ended up putting her on medication with the Vets help. That made a world of difference for her and her transition to this new phase.

Re: Does anyone have a cat?
My cats are fat and lazy loves. . . I can't imagine that either of them can jump into a crib - unless there was an open can of cat food in it or something.
but we'll keep the door to the nursery closed just in case.
