Anyone know if

you can use Valtrex (pills) for a cold sore? I have one that is just starting, but I know how bad it can get.....I'm in my 2nd trimester & my dr's office is closed tonight.

Re: Anyone know if

I asked 2 of the Drs. in my practice, and also asked a high-risk doctor while I was there for a check-up, and all 3 said it was perfectly fine...that for women with the other herpes, they make them take Valtrex for a month straight before their due date to help prevent a flare-up during delivery, and risk infecting the baby.

I have taken it once or twice, both times in my first trimester. Again, all 3 doctors said it was fine.

But I know several women on here said their doctors said it wasn't safe, so who knows Chat Icon

Re: Anyone know if

I just looked online and it said Valtrex is a pregnancy category B drug--not expected to harm a fetus.

I would not want to take it if I was pregnant, though. I believe that I got very sick to my stomach from Valtrex once. I do not know for sure b/c maybe I had a stomach bug. I often get very sick at the same time as I get a cold sore. I now only use topical creams but I would not even know if those were safe in pregnancy. I got a horrible cold sore last week but I'm not pregnant.
