Is anybody else

sacred to death of an epidural??? I am absolutely petrified for a number of reasons:

1st: I dont like needles period.
2nd: I am a big girl without the baby. How are they going to find the right spot??
3rd:I dont like needles period.

Everytime I think about it I start to quiver. Im all about pushing Jr out without the epi. Women have been doing it over and over for years so natural childbirth cant be that bad, right? But if I have to have a C-section if they cant get it they will have to knock me out and then I'll miss everything and DH wont be allowed in the delivery room with me. We'll both miss it.

Sorry for the vent.

I am just about the most medically squeamish person you'll ever meet, so I know how you feel!! IVs, needles, blood...Chat Icon Chat Icon

However, I will tell you this...I *barely* remember getting my epidural (16 months ago). I remember they had a hard time finding a spot because, evidently, my vertebrae are close together, but it was NOT bad...really! Trust me, you'll be begging for it. The worst part was when it wore off early...yikes!

If you're going for natural--I really applaud you; that's awesome! But the epidural is your friend!!

Re: Is anybody else

Well, here is my thinking...

It is either a needle for 30 seconds or umedicated labor for many many many hours.

I have made my choice a long time ago!Chat Icon

Re: Is anybody else

I was terrified also, but I sucked it up bc I wanted the pain to go away. I asked the doc not to show me the needle. He talked through the whole thing and told me what to expect. DH stood right in front of me and I held on to him.

I'm a big girl too and they were able to find the right spot without any problems.

Believe me when you are actually going through labor, you will find the strength to get past all your fears. Chat Icon Chat Icon

ME!
I have an irrational fear that the numbness will never leave and I will be paralyzed forever just because I couldnt deal with pain.

Re: Is anybody else

Don't be scared, you will love your aesthiaologist believe me!

Firstly, you don't even see the needle. It's not like they come in with the needle in their hand with the tip dripping.

You lean over with nurses support, the first shot numbs the entire area of your back, then the epi is adminstered, then you go AHHHHHHHHHHH, i love you!!!!

The prick of putting the iv in my hand hurt 150 times worse than the epi.

All you feel is a tiny prick, then a little burning when the drug comes through the catheter. Then you don't feel a thing until they shut it off.

I wish they woucl have left it on for my whole stay at the hospital :)

Don't worry, contractions are far time worse than the tiny prick of that needle!
Just think though, these dr's do this for a living, it's their job to find the right spot.

Kudos, praise and admiration for anyone who did childbirth naturally.

Re: Is anybody else

I SO hate needles....I can't look when they draw blood or when they give DD her shots!

The Epi, while it hurt for a fraction of a second (I was TERRIFIED), was SO worth it. The pain from the contractions was enough to distract me from the pain of the needle and again, the relief was heavenly.

Re: Is anybody else

I was just saying the other day that I am afraid of getting the epidural, but from what I heard it is very worth it. I guess you have to think about all the people each day that get one, and I guess it is better than the pain you would feel without it. I just don't like the idea that DH can't be with you for that.
