How much does the star program....
usually knock off on your taxes. I'm having a panic attack right now because although DH & I can afford a starter home in the 300's...the taxes are a killer! It's not realistic to find a house in the mid-200's thats not real far out or tiny. Although we are looking for a starter, I don't want a tiny house because we won't be looking to move for another few years and we plan on getting pregnant this year. I don't mind going out east but not too far because we have to commute everyday to Manhattan. Why oh why do the taxes have to be soooo high
I know there are alot of variables on how much the star will affect your taxes but how much is average? Thanks in advance.

I think its about $1000. But remeber that STAR won't kick in for probably about two years - we are looking in the town of Brookhaven and their filing date for Star is in March which I believe will be for 2008. Since we will not close before March 1, we will not be able to file until 2008 for 2009.
How far out are you willing to go?

Oh Wow I didn't know it took 2 years to kick in...great. Now I'm really having a panic attack. LOL. I'm willing to go as far out as Ronkonkoma area and we are not looking for a renovated house. As long as the house is structurally sound we are fine with doing cosmetic renovations, new kitchen, bath etc. I guess I'm just flipping out because I live in a co-op right now that my mother gave me...fully paid off and just pay maintenance. I'm not naive and I know are lifestyle is going to have to change alot as far as spending goes I just don't want to be house poor....this whole house buying thing is scary. Thanks for listening LOL.

I don't think it takes 2 years to kick in. The first year you are covered under the sellers exemption then you file for your own.

Ours taxes before star is $6,500 and we pay $5,300. We got it the 1st year we applied when it was first introduced.

in the town of Brookhaven and town of Islip its kicks in sooner than 2008. I called the assessors office for both. If you file by 3/1/07 it kicks in mid-2007.

We save about $1200. We closed on our house in Feb. and couldnt apply until Dec. (we live in Farmingdale), so it was applied the following year. I dont think the previous owner applied for it.

We live in Medford and our taxes are $4800 w/out STAR and $3600 w/STAR - so we save $1200.
BTW, it's great cuz we live 10 minutes from Ronkonkoma so DH's commute is easy.

I literally just put my Star application in the mail 5 minutes ago. We've owned our co-op for 2 years.

look in east rockaway -- that's where i just bought. taxes are low and there's a good selection of decent sized houses in the 3s.
unfortunately, i missed the cut off for STAR this year, but I do know that it will knock roughly $1200 off my taxes.

Thanks. I actually never really heard of East Rockaway until I saw an episode of Hidden Potential with a couple looking there. I will check it out on the MLS.

it depends on the town...brookhaven is march 1st - maybe if FH ever goes to the DMV, we can apply
i dont think there are any extensions...but i would call the town you live in.
