Bayside?
Anyone live there or know about the area? Are there good/bad parts, etc?
How is the commute to NYC?

Re: Bayside?
I live in bay terrace
it's nice, more suburban then some parts of queens
the train to the city is 20 minutes I think- not longer then 30 minute
not a lot of parking
it's expensive - 1 bedroom co-ops in my building are starting at $375K- but my building is considered one of the nicest- pool, gym, doorman, tennis, basketball, indoor parking garage ( all extra $$$)
the houses are close together like Long Beach houses

Re: Bayside?
bayside is really nice, I would love to live there... however its very expensive! also there is no subway you have to take the LIRR. if you want take the subway to manhattan you need to take a bus to flushing and get the 7 from there.

I did this a few times when I lived in fresh meadows and went to school at FIT
90 minutes each way- the LIRR is 20
not worth it IMO!

Re: Bayside?
Bayside is absolutely gorgeous but very $$$$ if you want a house. SD#26 is one of the bests in NYC and there are some areas that have more of a suburban atmosphere where others have more of an urban atmosphere. By Bay Terrace is beautiful and there are alot of co-ops. Depending on where you plan on buying the co-ops range greatly in price. As far as transportation I know the LIRR runs on Bell Blvd (which has alot of shops) and takes about 20 minutes to go into the city. The parking area for the LIRR is not very big though. Good Luck!

Re: Bayside?
we loved Bayside and for the 20 minute commute on LIRR its perfect, but parking is impossible and its more conjested than we wanted. Plus we'd be spending more than we are now fo a co-op that we are getting in Suffolk for a condo, but you can't beat that location. I know to be within walking distance to LIRR costs a lot!!

Re: Bayside?
We lived in Bayside for about 5 years and just recently moved. Nothing - and I mean nothing - beats the commute on the LIRR to NYC. It was such a great commute and parking was never a problem.
We lived in Oakland Gardens (a section of Bayside closer to Cunningham Park). We had an express bus that went into Manhattan as well - but the LIRR is faster and actually less expensive with a monthly plan. From that area we could also take a local city bus to Hillside Avenue and catch the F train at 179th street - but we rarely did that.
I loved living in Bayside and don't have a bad thing to say about it..I even go back to my nail salon there.

Re: Bayside?
I live in Oakland Gardens now (same as Ang-Rich) and we love it. It has this part suburban/part urban feel to it and it's close to LI and the city - can't beat it! Bay Terrace has great shopping and on my corner there are direct buses that take you into midtown - about 25 min.
Not sure if you're looking at co-op's or not but we are having an open house for ours tomorrow. FM if you're interested.
Good luck with your search!

I live in the towers at water's edge- I really don't like it- but it's a very nice building ( I just don't like co-ops- but if you want a co-op and can deal with rules- I would check it out)
the bay club is very nice- similar to my building but maybe a few more ammenties- I know they have an indoor pool
and my Favorite- Baybridge- Condos- so nice and cute- they are the most expensive but they are condos
we were orginally going to buy a condo in the area- but with the maintence and the fact that you don't have your own space - it's not really worth it
a 2 bedroom condo is going to be around $500K ( more in baybridge) and for that I can get a house
the only thing that is great about queens in the property tax is very low- but you have to pay an additional income tax- so it's about even

Re: Bayside?
As all the girls stated Bayside is a great area with one of the best NYC school districts.
Be aware that all of the condos and coops that Beth listed are really nice, however they are in Bay Terrace and not near the LIRR. You will have to take a bus or walk over a mile to get to the LIRR from there. It doesn't make for the greatest commute to NYC. That said, you can take the express bus.
If you commute to NYC everyday I would recommend trying to find an apartment/home in Bayside that is closer to the LIRR.

Re: Bayside?
Bayside is a great area, I have a lot of family that live there. Like everyone has said, it's expensive, but you can find Coops for reasonable amounts. We were looking in bayside (closer) to bell blvd for a coop but we found the one we are in now (glen oaks) Good luck to you!!

Re: Bayside?
I loved in Oakland Gardens (windsor park) and LOVED it. My Dh and I bought a house in Hollis HIlls (on the other side of Union Tpke from Oakland Gardens) and I am very happy here. It's a really nice 'hood and close to everything. We are a 6 min. drive to the bayside Train station and right by the express bus.

That's where my DH's dealership is! He's on Northern Blvd in Bayside just east of Bell.
We looked there for some time. It's very expensive, but a great place for more urban living.

I live a couple of miles from this area and it's so funny to hear it referred to as "more urban living!"
DH lived for a couple or years in a co-op in Windsor Oaks which is on Springfield Blvd, and that was a very nice development--quiet, close to highways, good parking.

Bayside is great! It's beautiful, close to the city, safe, diverse and super low taxes—all wonderful advantages. I grew up in Queens and am still here. Love it!

Re: Bayside?
I don't know what your budget is but they have some beautiful brand new construction homes for sale right off bell boulevard around 216th street which is right next to St. Mary's Hospital for Children. There are alot of beautiful homes in that area although they are quite pricey. I know they had one new construction they were asking 1.4 million for that just sold afer a year on the market.....don't know how much it sold for. Good Luck!
