What are your feelings..
on Amniocentesis? I'm 35 years old and my MD recommended I have it done. Of course I am TERRIFIED of having this done because there's a risk of miscarriage. I'm having nightmares about this..and can't sleep! The benefits of the test are detecting birth defects etc..but I am torn on this because I feel like it would be so wrong of me to terminate a pregnancy because there is a chance my baby may not be "normal".
What do you think? Is there anyone else out there who has to have this done and is just as scared as I am?

Re: What are your feelings..
I gave birth at 34 and the DR asked me if I wanted one. I decided to do the Ultrascreen at 13 weeks and the AFP at 16 weeks (?) and if the results were fine I'd skip it, if there results showed any indication that there could be an issue I would have it. All my results were great, so I opted not to do it.
So far my baby is happy and healthy
I hope that helps. Good luck with whatever decision you make

Re: What are your feelings..
I was very open to having one if necessary - I just turned 40 and thought I would have to. The risks are not as high as you may think. I have done extensive research on it and would have had it done if my doctor recommended it. It is a decision to make with your DH & doctor because many people just want to be prepared for what they may have to deal with if there is something wrong. I had the nuchal translucency and the AFP and was told I did not have to have the amnio. Both my sister & sister-in-law had amnios w/o incident. If you choose to have it, make sure you read up on it so you can make an informed decision. Good luck!

I guess the doctor scared me when he told me the risks involved. It's just a scary thought. I still have time to decide....and will defenitely think this one over.
Thanks!!!

Re: What are your feelings..
If there is no way you would terminate your pregnancy if there were defects, then I'd say no to the amnio....

What about just wanting to know if something is wrong so you can prepare for it before birth? I would want to know even though I wouldn't terminate.

The doctor has to tell you everything even if it is the slightest remote possibility. That is just to cover himself and it is required by the AMA. I have been a medical malpractice paralegal for over 15 years and a good doctor will provide you with every risk even if he knows they don't apply specifically to you. You should do the research yourself, though and be well informed before making a decision. Also, today, the procedure is very routine and has been perfected by most doctors and technicians.

I also work in this area but in Med mal insurance - informed consent is just a standard that they are required to do - they must tell you the risks, benefits and options of the procedure - to enable you to make the most informed decision.
Honestly if I was told I needed it I would probably do it - not that i would abort if there was a problem - but b/c there are many parents out there who get the shock of having a child with a problem and not being prepared in advance for how to care for the child or handle the situation.
I think whether you should do the amnio is a personal decision and you need to decide how you will feel if you don't have it and there is a problem versus if you do have it and will you be more prepared.
if you decide to have the procedure ask who will be doing it, how they do it, and how many of them they have performed.
