Do you know anyone who was affected by listeria?
I know there's differing of opinions on the "okayness" of having cold cuts and whatnot. My doctor has suggested that I not have any .. but I'm just wondering if anyone actually KNOWS anyone who was actually affected by listeria.

I have never heard of anyone infected by listeria. There is a certain temperature that kills listeria-I'm sure you can find this info on the web. Try heating them? Although rare listeria is almost always fatal to an unborn baby. My Dr however has always said cold cuts are fine. Everyone has different levels of perceived risk.

Just for the record, I didn't confuse affected and infected ... just used affected in the general sense.

Re: Do you know anyone who was affected by listeria?
As someone who works in Med Mal insurance - I read a lot of articles and have every type of case imaginable. I will say the risk - is rather low - the exact number I can't say - so I have no idea if it is 2000 a year or 10000 a year- My doctor said okay recently but in moderation. I have been really hesitant as honestly it has nothing to do with how busy a place is b.c the stuff can come into the store with it. I feel like it is not some that will kill me not to have so I try to avoid it as much as possible to me the risk is not worth the benefit - with my luck I would be one of the few people who get something. I think reading many of my case also makes me a lot more careful in general about things as I see a lot of various things in my job.
My doctor did say with anything I eat to be really cautious as treating pregnant women in general for food borne illnesses/poisoning etc it extremely difficult in general and can affect the fetus.
Each doctor recommends what they feel is best and each woman need to do what they feel is best for them and what their comfort level is.

Re: Do you know anyone who was affected by listeria?
I just decided to do a litle more readign about it and kinda scared myself.
I Was eating cold cuts kinda frequently, but I think Im gonna stop.
I think Im scared cause theres no tell tale signs that you have it, you could think you have the flu or a bad cold or throwing up from say Pregnancy...Thats the part that worries me.
Though the CDC quotes 2500 infected per year....and 500 of those die. And that truly is such a low low risk if you think about it.

My doctor said not to eat deli meat, and though I don't know anyone who was affected by listeria, it just hasn't been worth the risk for me. It's not like deli meat is so good for you anyway.

Re: Do you know anyone who was affected by listeria?
Yeah, I've been completely avoiding all deli meat - which for me is actually difficult since I used to bring a turkey sandwich for lunch like everyday! But today I had a moment of weakness (I'm sick!) and gave in to an urge for an italian hero. Now I'm all paranoid. I know I need to just forget it for now and just NOT do it again (for my sanity, if nothing else!).

Yes, don't make yourself nuts! Some doctors do tell women that moderation is ok. It's all a matter of thinking about what you are comfortable with.

Re: Do you know anyone who was affected by listeria?
I'm in a completely different mentality. I don't know anyone who had a child with fetal alcohol syndrome, but I'm not drinking a glass of wine weekly, like some doctor's say is OK. It's just my comfort level. I never want to say should've could've would've.
For my first pregnancy, I hadn't known anyone who ate peanut butter that affected their child, but I didn't eat it just in case. Since then, one of my friend's children was diagnosed with a peanut allergy which they think came from her eating PB during pregnancy.
I'm too much of a worry wart and I know I will blame myself if anything happens. I already wonder if all the sugar cravings I had caused my DS's hyperactivity.
