Cord blood banking - we did it!

Just wanted to share with you ladies that I signed up with Via Cord this week - we are banking the cord blood...

My dad has a heart condition and will most probably need a valve replacement in the future, so I'm hoping it will help him, but also, with the whole stem cfell thing going on lately, it's good to know that we will have somehting that may help us if any of us need it!

Re: Cord blood banking - we did it!

We have been trying to figure out which one to use.... CBR or Viacord. Did you by any chance chose one over the other for a particular reason?

My dr. told me about Via Cord - they are more reputable than CBR...

It is a lot of money - my parents are actually going to pay for it as a gift (a gift for everyone, really) but there are lots of affordable payment options....

I think we are going to do this too... we have to do a little more research before we decide which company to use. I've only seen Via Cord and CBR..are there even any others?!?!

Re: Cord blood banking - we did it!

I hope when the time comes, that we can find a way to do it. My father had Alzheimer's Disease and it is a horrible thing to experience that deterioration. I have done limited research on the treatment of Alzheimer's with cord blood cells but if it helped one family dealing with it, it would be worth the expense.

Can you give us a roundabout estimate as to how much it is? Are we talking over $2,000 or is it less?

We are leaning towards it too, but I want to do some more research as well- it seems like all the articles I've seen are written by the companies themselves, so they are hardly objective.

WE are thinking about doing it too. If anyone has a roundabout figure that would be greatly appreciated!

I heard the exact opposite. CBR is more reputable than Via Cord. DH did a ton of research and we have family members who are doctors, dentists and RN's in the family and they too said go with CBR so we did. It is 1975.00 they give you discounts, ask for them and then its 125.00 a yr till the baby is 18 yrs. old. they also have payment plans. It is very reasonable especially if there are known diseases in your family that dont have to be cancers, or anemia. there are 75 diseases they treat, like diabetes, alzheimers, heart disease etc., very common diseases. and it can help you, your DH and siblings.

Re: Cord blood banking - we did it!

I was at the docs the other day and a woman there swore by and uses MAZE. They are located in Westchester and they only charge a 1 time fee (alomst 2K) and no yearly until 18.

She also said (and don't quote me) that they are the only ones regulated by the state.

She spoke very highly of them over the others....

just a FYI!

Re: Cord blood banking - we did it!

Congratulations! What a great decision to make for the health of your family!

My OB promotes CBR, but has said that Viacord is equally as good. He went to tons of conferences on this and said that you want to use one of these two companies - other companies may be cheaper, but if they ever go out of business they will most likely be bought out by CBR or viacord and transferring the specimen can compromise it.

We got it for DS (but this is a few years ago) from CBR - $1750 the inital storage and $99 per year. There are tons of payment plans. Seriously there are tons of things that I cut back on to make sure that we had this insurance (that I plan on never using, but never want to think "should've could've would've") I'm not sure what the rates are now, but I have heard that there is a discount for multiple children, so I am assuming this one will be less for us.

This is exactly why we did it. I used viacord.... because my OB used them. I figured that was the best recommendation for me.

I'd be wary to only rely on my doctor's recommendation. My OB told me that cord blood companies provide various incentives ("kickbacks") to doctors to get them to encourage their patients to enroll with expensive private cord blood banking.

Also, I was surprised to learn that the AAP does not recommend private cord blood banking (unless there is a family history of certain diseases), but instead recommends public donations. Of course, the $$ might be a small price to pay for "peace of mind," but I think the cord blood industry does prey on pregnant women's emotions. I will be donating my baby's cord blood to a public bank.

Here is the official AAP position on cord blood banking:

When consulted by prospective parents who are interested in donating cord blood to a philanthropic bank or paying to have cord blood stored in a for-profit bank, the physician can provide the following information:
1. Although preliminary data show encouraging results in cord blood stem cell transplantation for a variety of genetic, hematologic, and oncologic diseases, the procedure at this time is considered investigational.
2. The indications for autologous transplantation are limited, and the potential for future expansion is unlikely.
3. Given the difficulty of making an accurate estimate of the need for autologous transplantation and the ready availability of allogeneic transplantation, private storage of cord blood as "biological insurance" is unwise. However, banking should be considered if there is a family member with a current or potential need to undergo a stem cell transplantation.
4. Conditions such as leukemia or severe hemoglobinopathy may indicate the need for directed-donor cord blood banking for sibling cord blood transplantation.
5. Philanthropic donation of cord blood for banking at no cost for allogeneic transplantation is encouraged. In such instances, the parents should be informed of the appropriate operational principles recommended for the bank listed herein.

Institutions or organizations (private or public) involved in cord blood banking should consider the following recommendations:

Recruitment practices should be developed with an awareness of the possible emotional vulnerability of pregnant women and their families and friends. Efforts should be made to minimize the effect of this vulnerability on recruitment decisions.
Accurate information about the potential benefits and limitations of allogeneic and autologous cord blood banking and transplantation should be provided.
A policy should be developed regarding disclosing to the parents any abnormal findings in the harvested blood.
Specific permission for maintaining demographic medical information should be obtained, and the potential risks of breaches of confidentiality disclosed.
Written permission should be obtained during prenatal care, and before the onset of labor. The practice of collecting cord blood first and obtaining permission afterward is considered unethical and should be discouraged.
Consultation with the institutional review board or hospital ethics committee about recruitment strategies and the wording of consent forms is recommended.
Cord blood collection should not be done in complicated deliveries, and the cord blood stem cell collection program should not alter routine practice for the timing of umbilical cord clamping.
Because of the investigational status of cord blood banking and the high risk for its potential abuse, the regulatory agencies (eg, US Food and Drug Administration, Federal Trade Commission, state equivalent of these federal agencies) are encouraged to have an active role in providing oversight for the safety and welfare of the population.
