This is long but I need advice.
I've been feeling down the last few days, and I had an epiphany a few hours ago. I realized that I really, truly do not want to go back to my reading coach job. I want to go back to being a classroom teacher. When I taught summer school I remembered how much I enjoy being around kids and how I am good at teaching. Whereas, I just don't think I have the personality to be a good coach (it's a lot like being a supervisor) because I don't like having to tell people what to do (especially when they are doing things well, but are not bowing down to region mandates). I feel like I will be under the microscope all year if I am the coach again.
Anyway, I don't know how to tell my principal that I adamantly do not want to do this job. I was thinking of telling him that I wanted to teach, and if I could not teach I was going to send out resumes, even if it means leaving NYC. Is this a good approach? Is there another way I could go about it? I am not good at this sort of thing.

Tracy, just be honest and explain your reasonings. You need to do what makes you happy and if it doesn't work out in that school maybe you can find something closer where you live. Good Luck.

Well imo it sounds like you are giving him an ultimatum....and i don't think i would do that...
I would tell him how you are feeling and ask if there was any positions open that you could have!
If someone gave me an ultimatum i would let the person go

I am fairly certain that there is going to be a sixth grade opening, which I would love since I know most of those kids.
I don't want to give an ultimatum. I know his concern will be replacing me as the coach- the last time he had an outsider in the job he had a lot of problems.
I just really worry that I'll fail, mainly because I don't want the job in the first place. I want to walk away now.

Trace - I'm sorry you're going through this. I would just be honest and tell him how you feel. If they value you as an educator, and it sounds like they do, since you are in a supervisory position, they should work with you. The AP at the HS I did a leave at last year resigned as AP at the end of the year and went back to teaching Spanish, which is what he had originally done. He was an AP for two years, and it wasn't for him. Your school should be happy that you are so enthusiastic about the kids and being in the classroom! If they're not willing to accomodate you, well maybe it's time to put your resume out. You have a lot of experience and can probably pretty easily get a job closer to home at a much higher salary!!! Best of luck!!!
