Im confused as to what to do. I signed up for lamaze at our hospital but now im not sure i want to do it.

Is anyone taking a class or is everyone just going to buy a dvd and just wing it. Im undecided now.

Re: Lamaze

If you know what could happen during labor, what tools (vacuum) they could use, your pain control options, what they do in a C-section and could get a tour of the hospital at another time I would skip lamaze.

Re: Lamaze

I am taking a childbrith education class that includes

what to expect during labor and delivery, relaxation and breathing techniques and pain management choices. In addition to in-class discussions on the above topics, films on birth and Cesarean Section are shown.

Also includes a tour of the hospital, taking care of baby and infant CPR

Re: Lamaze

Jen I didn't take any classes - I just went on the hospital tour and read up on epi's and other pain relief. I was fine. You are going to do what feels right at the moment - when I had a contraction breathing through it helped - I didn't need a class to teach me how to do it.

I'm sure some people find it helpful, but IMO you can figure it all out on your own.

Re: Lamaze

we got the DVD. we werent sure if we would be able to do it b/c of DH's schedule but i'm glad we didnt. The DVD is good on informing us of everything and the lady cracks me up!!! it looks like it was done in the 80's or something but at least it is entertaining. We have a hard time taking it series when we watch it.

Re: Lamaze

I got the DVD too. It was informative because it explained what to do when you go into labor and the different stages of labor. Also what drugs you may be taking and the effects that they may have on you. It also went into what to expect w/ a c-section.

The lady was ssssssooooo irritating though. I hear everything you learn in lamaze goes out the window anyway

Re: Lamaze

I took no classes at all with my first. I don't plan on it this time either. When I was in the delivery room, the nurse asked me if I'd taken any childbirth classes and I said no. She said, "Oh that's good." [because each "team" of nurses/doctors kind of have their own rhythm and sometimes a well-trained & laboring mom can interfere with how things need to move along because she's trying to "go by the book."]

Re: Lamaze

I didn't do a class - just got that "wonderful" DVD. It was hysterical but i have to say when it came down to L&D it helped me a great deal. I was aware of the terms that were being used by doctors and nurses and mindful of what I had to do. I recommend it!Chat Icon

I took the class and did use the breathing. I actually made it all the way to 5-6cm with (that was when I got to the hospital). I also liked the tour because I felt like I knew where everything was and was prepared.

Re: Lamaze

i'm definitely taking the class. some ppl are able to wing it but knowing me i'll need an actual human being teaching me on what to do. also i could ask some q's that may lead me to a better state of mind during the day of.

Re: Lamaze

Because of my husband's work schedule, we were unable to take the classes. I also had friends that took them and they said once they were there that went out the window. She said as long as you have a nurse that can guide you, she was fine. I had a C-Section so I can't really said anything but I had a wonderful nurse as things were progressing when we were thinking I was going to have a vaginal birth. I had ordered the DVD and watched it with my husband. I watched the whole thing but my husband only watched certain topics. We were fine. The DVD is very informative and worth the $36 dollars I paid when I bought it off Amazon.com
Best of luck. You will be fine.
