Breastfeeding

My baby is due in a week, and I am debating whether to breastfeeding. I know there are many health benefits for the baby when breastfeed..I have just heard horror stories..pain etc about it..

Re: Breastfeeding

I will give you the best advice someone gave me. If you want to do it- make sure you do for 3 weeks. It does hurt. But by the 3rd week so much of the pain subsided (or I got used to it). Now at 8 months and back to work I exclusively bf and pump.

Re: Breastfeeding

It's the kind of thing you might as well try. You've got nothing to lose and everything to gain by giving it a try and then if it's too uncomfortable or it doesn't work out at least you can stop and you have no regrets. If you never try you may end up feeling like you missed out on giving your baby something and experiencing it yourself. I definitely agree with the AP. It is painful at first and just plain awkward so you have to really give it a shot. It's takes a while to get the hang of it.

I never had any pain. well at least not until someone got teeth. Chat Icon The hospital should have lactation consultants on staff. Make sure they come see you to help you get positioned right and the baby latched on properly. I'd even call in one of the nurses each time you try to breastfeed to help you get started. I had a hard time in the beginning trying to get DS to latch on, which was very frustrating, but after about 3 weeks we were doing pretty well. I say give it a try. You may love it. And if it's not for you then you can just make the switch to formula. I'm so glad that I was able to BF.

If you do plan on trying it ask for as much help as possible in the hospital - nurses and lactaction consultants are great and always willing to help. I did not find it painful and I loved being able to feed my DDs. Actually I was more afraid of that scary pump than actually BFing! Chat Icon But actually that wasn't bad either. Good luck!

Re: Breastfeeding

You should give it a try and see how you feel about it. Also, try to get the baby on the boob ASAP after you deliver. And just to set your mind at ease a little, I never really experienced any pain with BFing.

Re: Breastfeeding

if you want to, try it - it hurt the first few days for me and right when I started htinking "oh heck no" (but more colorful) it got better and became natural - i also pump now as well as bf so dh and others can feed her...I posted on pregnancy a while back about my exp but I found it not to be as bad as I thought initially! Chat Icon good luck with what you decide - follow your heart - either way you will be a great mommy!

Re: Breastfeeding

I honestly never had pain until the bugger bit me for the first time after he got his first tooth!

No but honestly, if you are going to try you should really want to do it and commit yourself to 3 weeks. I really never had pain and he latched on well from the get-go. I was just neurotic that he wasn't getting enough, but after going to the doctor and getting weighed and seeing him thrive I was fine. Then it gets really really easy. I absolutely love it and would totally recommending trying if thats what you want to do.

It takes practice, but it is one of the best things you can do for your baby. It is definitely worth it in the end.

Re: Breastfeeding

I had a slightly different experience than most people. I was not able to nurse for the first 36 hours due to some medication I was on. As soon as I was able to nurse him, he latched on like a pro (even the nurses said it was like he had done it before!!). I did take a breastfeeding class before having him so I kind of knew what to do. It didn't hurt at all as long as he was latched on properly. In fact, in the past 3 months, the only times it has hurt has been when I was engorged from being away from him for too long and when I got blocked ducts. The only way to fix either is to nurse through it.
I LOVE the bond I have with DS from nursing. I wasn't sure how I would feel about it before I did it but it is really wonderful.

i totally agree. i hated it for two weeks. i wanted to give up every single day. it absolutely killed & i cried every day. but it was so worth it! now at 4 months, i love BF my daughter. five times a day we spend cuddled up nursing and share a very special time together.

try it for 3 weeks. if it doesn't work out, or you can't take it, switch to formula & don't give it a second thought.

Re: Breastfeeding

BF is a committment that you make. You just have to know that you may hit some bumps in the road but if you want to figure out ways to get them you ask for help, get professional advise/help and keep on going. I think if you go into it 1/2 way it is very easy to give up at the first sign of an issue. You just have to tell yourself that you can do this and then push the issues if you have any.

Good Luck.
