i used the eraser tool. i searched thru some old posts and found one on how to do it. i think it was one of stefanies posts 
Thanks, groovy. So did I, but the only problem with using that tool is that whatever you "erase" goes away permanently, and you can't go back to the file and reuse/redo. I'm slowly learning how to manipulate the path "way".
what is the path "way"?
I still learning it, but you pretty much have to select an area with the "pen" tool (diagonal from the T), and add the layer mask for it. That way, if you change your mind, you could always come back to the layer/layer mask and manipulate.
