cord blood
WHo is banking cord blood? How much does it cost? DO they ask you in the hospital if you want to, or does it need to be set up before hand?

I am planning on doing this - I think it costs several thousand dollars - but my parents are paying because my dad is going to need another heart valve one of these days, and they are doing stem cell research on that, so I'm hoping maybe my cord blood will help somehow....
I was going to start looking closer into this and talk to my dr. for info - but if anyone has any info, I would like to know this as well!!!

I did it for my first and will definitely do it for this one. It costs about $1700-2000 to set up and about $100 a year for storage, but to me that is a TINY price for insurance.
I would only go with viacord or CBR they are the two big companies and don't show any signs of going out of business. Beware of companies that are much cheaper. If they go out of business, the cells can be compromised during transportation to the new facility.
You need to set this up before with your OB (my OB had an additional fee)and with the company. you get a kit to bring to the hospital and a courier comes to the hospital to pick up the package within a few hours.
I haven't checked out viacord (although I'm sure their success rate is great), but I know CBR has about 40 people using the stem cells, including a mother using her child's stem cell.
I have a $250 coupon for CBR if anyone is interested. When I called for my first - I asked for the previous year's price and they gave it to me!

We used Viacord, it was about $2000, and $125 a year for storage. They have different payment schedules you can choose, we chose to pay the $2000 on our credit card over a six month period, they automatically charged us. They bill you the $125 every year around your childs birthday. We did not have to pay anything until DS was born. It is all set up before hand, they will send you a kit that you have to bring with you to the hospital. We had to call on the way to the hospital and then again right after DS was born and a messenger was sent to pick it up within the hour. We told my OB we were doing this and we were not charged anything for the collection. HTH

My dr's office works with CBR, which we will be using. It is $1,700 initial (which you do not pay until you send your kit back after you have the baby; you can also cancel at any time before hand), $150 shipping fee (a CBR rep. comes to the hospital within 2 hrs of having the baby and picks up your kit) and it is $125 yr.
