nervous about giving birth...
Any first time moms starting to get really nervous about the labor process? All of a sudden, it just starting dawning on me that I have to fit a watermelon through a keyhole, and I am panicking!

I'm taking that class this week. I took the hospital tour this past weekend, I think that is what made me panic a little!

Re: nervous about giving birth...
YES!!!! Especially after the women I work with have to tell me their horrible labor stories about how the epidural didnt work, or they were in labor for 20 hrs, blah blah blah. It is making me so nervous. I hope I can do it w/out having a breakdown.

Re: nervous about giving birth...
I used to have panic attacks where I'd realize that there was NO chance of having the baby without discomfort. It was like I would all of a sudden realize that there was no pleasant solution to the whole birthing "problem", then I'd FREAK. Well, I have to be honest....the day I found out that my dd was breech and I needed a C-section, I was secretly SO excited that I didn't have to go into labor. Isn't that sick? What the hell is wrong with me? Anyway, my point, which I'm dancing around, is that it's totally scary, but when it happens, you honestly don't think about it. Not to be graphic, but I was sliced opened and stitched back up, and it really wasn't all that bad! As weird as that sounds, it wasn't! Hey, you get a baby in the end, what better present at the end of something really crappy could there be?

I agree with ALLof this! I cant tell you how scared I was. It literally put me into a depression througout most of my pregnancy because all I focused on was going into labor. It made me sick! My water broke slowly at home and I was still in hysterics..but once you get to the hospital, so much is going on and although for me it took 27 hours to finally have her, its like a whirlwind. I wound up with a c section after pushing for almost 4 hours so I had the best of both worlds. As Rachel said, a c section is not fun but all you are thinking of is having your baby and you are ok..not to mention...the drugs do help! LOL If I could do it, ANYONE can! Try not to worry too much, in the end, the baby has to come out...one thing you cant control! Good luck!

I was freaked out as well. But it really all is a whirlwind that once the contractions start you are concentrating on dealing with them, there isn't much else to think about.

Re: nervous about giving birth...
I was nervous aswell and let me just tell you your body is amazing and knows what to do. I had an epidural and I also took lamaze and did use the breathing. You can do it , and by the time you reach that point and are in the hospital you will do just about anything just to meet your new baby.

Re: nervous about giving birth...
I was never nervous about giving birth after I took my hypnobirthing classes. I listened to tapes that helped me relax. I had the most postive birth experience and said that I new I could do it again and it wasn't that bad.
Don't listen to people's horror stories because everyone's experience's are different. I pray that all the ladies have as wonderful and postitive experiences as I did!

Re: nervous about giving birth...
I think about it but I am not that nervous. I keep telling myself that we are "made" to do this and women do it all the time. I am hoping that I will be able to get an epidural though

Re: nervous about giving birth...
I cried to my mother many many times while I was pregnant. It was the fear of the unknown. We've never been through this before and we all know there is going to be some sort of discomfort/pain involved. I worked myself up about this for the longest time. When it was time for the epidural and the c-section...I was like do it NOW!! You get over it...yeah, it's painful (the c-section cut..not the epidural~that was a piece of cake) but that's what drugs are for! Just know that it's temporary and we're strong women who can do it all.
Pftt...I'd like to see a man go through what we do....
All you new moms are going to do beautifully!!!

Re: nervous about giving birth...
believe it or not...all that nervous feeling tends to go away when you are actually in labor...your just so focused on the excitement of meeting your baby, your baby's heatlth, getting annoyed at family members you wish would have stayed in the waiting room. Once you are in labor you become the voice of reason as your DH starts acting all foolish

I think the though of having to get a C-section is what scares me most. I am not liking the idea of having to get an epidural either for natural birth or for a C-section. I am a hyponchondriac + have panic attacks and the thought of having a needle stuck in my spine is the cause of anxiety for me.

Re: nervous about giving birth...
I'm the biggest wimp ever and I did it (with an epideral). I found that the whole thing was so overwhelming and surreal that I don't remember being scared. You just enter into the "moment" of it and there is no turning back so you just do it. I still can't believe I did it. I got a flu shot a couple of weeks ago and was a wreck. I kept reminding myself that I gave birth and therefore can handle anything but it didn't work. Don't sweat it. It'll happen and then it will be over.

Re: nervous about giving birth...
I still remember when I saw a 10cm circle in my Bradley class. All I could thnk of was "What in God's name did I sign up for???? No way. The baby will have to stay in there."
I do think a birthing class can alleviate a lot of stress. My biggest fear was either a C-section & an epidural (not a big fan of needles at all). In the end, it works itself out. One thought that calmed me down was that millions and millions of women gave birth before me - if they could do it, so could I - and for that matter so can you.

I'll be taking Bradley classes as well... and I agree - its scary, but everyone here on this planet arrived the same way.... we can do this!!!

Its not nearly as bad as you might think! The only thing that got me through it was thinking that millions of women have been pregnant and given birth...if they could do it, I could. also..think DRUGS. DRUGS. DRUGS

I'm not going to lie, I had such a bad panick attack on the operating table that they almost sedated me. I am a major panicker. However, I just kept focused on them getting the baby out and made my husband tell me the story of the night we met, and that calmed me down. The epidural was so NOT a big deal and that was what was scaring me the most. You really hardly feel a thing. It's pretty cool, actually. Then, I panicked for two days after having the baby because I was afraid of what it was going to feel liek when they took it out. When they came to remove it, I thought it hurt like hell, but they said, "No, it's been out, that's the tape coming off your back." I felt like an idiot
