Leg Cramps
I have been having horrible leg cramps every night...at first it was like a charlie horse that woke me up in the middle of the night, and now I have what feels like shin splints too!! How can I get this to stop???
Does anyone else have this or any solution to the pain? It is bad enough I pulled my back out and can barely walk...this is making it so much worse!

Re: Leg Cramps
Ouch! I woke up with two charlie horses this morning. One in one leg and then an hour later one in the other
The things I have read to do for them is to drink plenty of fluids, add more potassium to the diet (like bananas) and try light exercise and stretching before bed.

Re: Leg Cramps
I'm not sure about what works for shin splints, but the quickest way to stop a charlie horse once it starts is to get right out of bed and stand up. The weight on your legs and feet get rid of the cramp almost instantly.

Re: Leg Cramps
I had leg cramps too almost nightly. I was very good about eating bananas and drinking plenty of fluids too. I'd shoot up out of bed and step flat on the floor right away and they'd go away just as quickly as they came.
They are perfectly normal but such a pain to deal with. Anything that interrupts sleep is a pain!

Unfortunately I am having back problems so "jumping up" is not an option anymore!! That is why the pain is so terrible!!! And to top it all off, I don't really like banana's since I am pg!

Re: Leg Cramps
They are awful. It's a hereditary condition for me. My mom used to get them so bad and mine started as a teenager... YUP, a banana a day.
Despite the banana a day I still got them at night with this pregnancy (maybe my body needs more) so yes, I would JUMP out of bed in the middle of the night, stiffle my moans and walk around to relax it.
Oraange juice, pretzels, banana... the potassium and salt will help to contract and relax the muscle.
My HS human physiology teacher explained it to me years ago. The muscle contracts but there isn't enough potassium in the body to flood into the muscle to help it relax and then you get the cramp.
Feel better.
