I don't have one but after our next baby I plan on getting the 10 year non-hormonal one.

I think he may have been looking at the old time IUD... years and years ago it was associated with Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. Supposedly this new type (Mirena) is safer and doesn't have the horrible side effects. My OB/GYN says that he's swears by it but still I'm a little uneasy. What to do, what to do!Chat Icon

Re: IUD as a means of BC

I got the Mirena IUD inserted in August. My doctor RAVED about it. If you can get through the first 3 months you will love it. The first three months are rough. I actually bled for 6 straight weeks, then spotting for another 2. It was not fun. Then my first period came SO BAD- cramps, lots of bleeding, and it lasted 2 weeks. This past period, not as heavy, no cramps, but it still lasted about 2 weeks.

From what I understand, though, gradually the periods will become lighter, and shorter- so much so that some women don't get a period anymore, or only some spotting.

As far as the hormonal side effects- there are NONE. I actually recognize myself through the whole month, unlike with the pill. I used to be come a raging *****, and I felt like Jekyll and Hyde. I love not having to remember to take a pill every day.

Now, this is only MY experience, and of course things could be different for you.

Feel free to FM me if you have any other questions.

Re: IUD as a means of BC

HI- I had one for 6 years. I had the one you can keep in for 10 years. (I took it out b/c we may be TTC).
When it first is in - you will have some cramping that feels like menstrual cramps. There is some spotting on and off for 2 weeks. But that is it. I LUVED it & will have one again.
My cousin just got hers - and she has been fine. She had some bleeding on and off- but nothing that isn't normal. She is very happy with it- & AF was always right on time every month.

My cousin got pregnant with hers. Apparantly it "fell" from where it was supposed to be.

That can happen. You need to have it checked by your Doc to make sure it is still in place.

Re: IUD as a means of BC

As with ANY BC there are going to be mishaps or side effects.

My body rejects IUDs. I tried both brands. But it is actually very rare that your body rejects them. So I would not worry about that at all.
I did not bleed at all. Just mild cramping like a period for a few days. Then I was fine. It was the best BC I ever had. You can actually feel if it falls out of place..not painful but something just feels wierd or off inside of your body. I felt great with it and you never worry about BC.
I have not read any negative medical information on them at all. What reviews did your husband read that worried you?

I have the Mirena and I love it! Best form of BCP I have ever been on! I got it put in last July, and I did spot bleed for about a month. It wasn't a flow, just there when you went to the bathroom.

My first period was nothing! So light, and less than 3 days. The second period did come after 3 weeks, instead of my normal 4 weeks, but it was even lighter.

Overall, now my periods are like spotting for a day or two. About every 30 days. In some woman, your period even goes away.

It good for 5 years. Not sure if I plan on taking it out before then, but if I do, your fertility comes back right away.

If you can get past a few weeks of spotting, I highly recommend it.

Re: IUD as a means of BC

I've been floundering back and forth on getting an IUD for MONTHS. I would only get the one without hormones because otherwise I don't see the point of putting a foreign object with hormones in your body if you can just take hormones with the pill or the ring.

But a friend of mine had it and it perforated her uterus so that scared me. On the other hand, my aunt, who used to be an OB-GYN (now a ped neurologist) raves about it so I'm still undecided.
