How much is TMI?

I got my BFP about a week ago and have my first Dr. appt. on Friday. I have been looking up a lot on the internet and it seems like there is so much information out there.

I know I will feel better after I see the doc, but right now, I feel like I am nervous about eating or drinking so many things. Also, I want to get some books and I did a search and saw some that you ladies recommended, but was it a little overwhelming getting all the information? Any tips? TIA.

Re: How much is TMI?

first tip: stay calm....it is completely overwhelming whether it's your first or third.

drink plenty of water
the normals no-no's: alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine (most doctors will tell you 1 cup of coffee a day is fine), no shellfish, no cheese that is not pasturized.

Some say no cold cuts, I did/am doing it.

as far as Too Much Information....no such thing on the PG board.

Congrats and a Happy & Healthy 9 months to you

Thanks Shana. I am not panicking or anything, just get confused sometimes when I see differing things. Like, one thing said that nuts are good to eat while pregnant, and then saw "don't eat peanuts or peanut butter, it could cause the baby to develop an allergy to peanuts." Chat Icon

I have cut out alcohol, caffiene and artificial sweeteners and I did know about some of the other things but I appreciate the tips Chat Icon

Re: How much is TMI?

bulldinky on the peanut butter.....I ate Pb & J all the time with DD. Don't know if she's allergic since you can't give it to them till after 1 yr old.

Nuts are good.....great source of protein and essential fatty acids.

make a list of concerns and go over it with your doctor since there is some discrepancy between doctors as to what is ok and what to avoid.

You're avoiding the main things, which is good.

Re: How much is TMI?

Peanutbutter is fine as long as you don't have an allergy to it. I've eaten it throughout my pregnancy.

You can have caffeine but if you drink coffee try to limit it to a cup a day. I have been drinking a cup of coffee a day. If I do have coffee, I try to avoid caffeinated soda or anything like that for the rest of the day. Chocolate has been a little more difficult to limit, but it supposedly has much lower levels of caffeine than your average cup of coffee.

Certain types of shellfish are okay as long as they are cooked. Shrimp is actually very low in mercury. You can check out this website for more information on mercury levels in fish: www.epa.gov/ost/fish
Shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish are the main ones to stay away from due to high levels of mercury.

Cheeses are fine as long as they are pasteurized. You can find pasteurized feta, brie, etc in supermarkets - just check the labels to make sure.

It's important to remember that everyone is going to have a different opinion on these things. Your best resource is your doctor. Always ask him or her if you are confused about something and need more information. The books/pregnancy websites are a good resource but they can sometimes drive you crazy and make you more confused. Other well-meaning people will tell you old-wives tales that are not valid.

Check out this website too for more information:

I couldn't agree with this statement more. With my first, my dr. waited until my 6th or 7th month before "allowing" me to read pregnancy books [in part b/c of my poor health and b/c they didn't want me to fill my head with fears for no real reason]. Doesn't mean I didn't read them before that...but it made sense to NOT read anything that might make me worry. I stay away from magazines for this reason...they tend to have heart-wrenching and heart-breaking stories that will make you worry.

Thanks Ladies! I went to the doc yesterday for my first appointment and asked the NP all of my questions. FYI, she said about the peanut butter that she had read something too, but that I should be OK if I am eating it in moderation.

It's a little overwhelming right now. I have my second appointment right before Christmas and will have my first sonogram. Chat Icon Chat Icon
