Any Catholics who go to mass on a semi regular basis- come in
I wanted to see if any of you felt the same way about this!
We've been taking my daughter to mass on a regular basis as she is making her Communion this Spring.
Growing up the church we went to never offered the wine to the congregation, it just wasn't done. You went up for communion and that was that. No wine.
The church we go to now (and most others it seems) offers wine. Obviously you don't have to take it. And I certainly don't. But I see a lot of other people do.
Does anyone else find this practice to be like INSANELY INSANELY unsanitary? Tons of people drinking out of the same cup? In this awful Flu season no less? Not to mention colds, stomach bugs, cold sores, etc? I am far from a germophobe but this is just next level.
They basically wipe it with a cloth, give it a quarter turn, and move on to the next person. All I can picture is the backwash and the germs that must be brewing in there. It can't be sanitary. I can't imagine it being ok Board of Health wise either.
Every week DH and I talk about it. We can't wrap our heads around it.
I was wondering if anyone else noticed it and felt the same way- or is it just me because my church growing up didn't even offer it as an option? But I still can't imagine how it is safe or in anyway healthy, you know?

But it's the Blood of Christ so it can't be unsanitary!
Sorry - I had to!
I totally agree with you. It's gross and I would NEVER drink from that cup.

Any Catholics who go to mass on a semi regular basis- come in
I go to Mass every week, but my Church stopped offering wine after the big swine flu about 10 years ago. I agree with you, and growing up going to Mass my mom would never take the wine or let me. But if I do happen to be at another parish for a Christening or Wedding or just because and they offer it I have taken it. I know PP was joking , but in my head I say God won't let us get sick from it, silly I know, lol!!!

We go every week as well (we are forced to in a sacrament year). Our parish doesn't offer wine. The other parish in our town doesn't either.

Re: Any Catholics who go to mass on a semi regular basis- come in
I really think they shouldn't be offering it. I know it's a part of the mass and a tradition, but it really is very unsanitary.
Last week a woman behind us was coughing her head off. Hacking away the entire mass. We watched her get up and go drink from the cup!
I mean if you are sick, you should at least have the common decency to not do that. Every single person who drank from it after her I kept thinking- "you're getting sick", "you're getting sick", "now you're getting sick". I thought that was a very selfish thing of her to do!
I really think my church is behind the times in still offering it.
But what amazes me is the people who take it. A lot don't. But a lot do!

I grew up Lutheran, and when we had Communion, they had trays of individual glasses. Like half a shot glass or something. That way, everyone had their own individual glass.

I am Jewish, but I went to mass once and they offered the wine in tiny cups. They were the smallest cups I had ever seen. Perhaps you could suggest the small cups.

Yep it’s gross and I’ve NEVER drank the wine. I went to a mass in NC once and they had little shot glasses which were perfect.

Re: Any Catholics who go to mass on a semi regular basis- come in
i always drink form the cup and have for the past 20 years. I was also a Eucharistic Minister and would have to drink any leftover Blood after it was distributed. I have never gotten sick from it.
As far as I know there have been no studies about this, but there also haven't been any epidemics.
You're not required but are encouraged to partake fully in the Body AND Blood of Christ. It is a personal choice.

When I use to go to church, it would turn my stomach. I think it's a disgusting, unnecessary practice. Individual cups or don't do it at all. You couldn't pay me money to share a cup that countless strangers have put their mouth on.

I totally get that you are supposed to partake in both, but there has to be a better way. Like others have mentioned DH says they should have the tiny individual cups. I see by the other posts here that some churches do that and I think that is great. If they offered that I would absolutely partake. While I am sure there hasn't been any epidemics, I am quite sure flu and colds and viruses have passed from one person to the next. I wouldn't drink from an unwashed glass in a restaurant, or chug from a stranger's water bottle on the train, same thing here. It's really just common sanitation. Back when the church originated, sanitation and cleanliness was not what is today. Times have changed and I just think the church should change with them. At least for the little things like this. More people would be able to participate in receiving both the body and the blood then.

Re: Any Catholics who go to mass on a semi regular basis- come in
I don't go to mass regulary anymoe but when I was younger I did and I remember them serving the wine and the thought of sharing it grosses me out.
I go to church now once a month since that's all that is really checked on for DD relgion class and if I remember correctly they do offer wine but in little individual cups. Though I think the priest minsters etc drink out of the actual cup.
I will have to pay attention when we go this weekend.

We go regularly, and when I was a kid, it was always 1 glass but I was never old enough to drink from it but my grandma did. Our church now gives out little shooters and my DH and I always laugh bc I feel like I’m taking a shot at church

Yes, most vile thing ever. I get so mad at my mom when she takes it. I feel the worst for the poor priest who has to drink the reminder after all these nuts had their mouths all over it!

Re: Any Catholics who go to mass on a semi regular basis- come in
I grew up going to mass every sunday almost and they always had the wine. I never took it. EVER. I still will not.
My son is in catholic school in 2nd grade now but here in PA they do communion in 3rd grade.
I think its the most backwards practice in this day and age. I skeeve it. I walk right by it.

Growing up my parish never did this. I think the only time I drank the wine was at my wedding. I do remember going to church for a holy day and I remember them dipping the body of Christ in the wine. I only saw it once.

I haven't been to church since the last wedding or funeral I had to go to, but I remember this as a kid and it always grossed me out. They wipe it with a basically a cloth napkin!
My ex-bf was Lutheran and I remember us being in church for something and he was appalled. He didn't shut up the rest of the Mass, whispering about how gross it was. He said in his church they had little cups of grape juice and could not get over what was going on.
I never took it. No way.

Our parish offers wine and I always think that same thing! The only time I have ever taken is when I am first to do so. That has only happened twice in my life lol

Re: Any Catholics who go to mass on a semi regular basis- come in
Not a church goer, but have been recently for baptisms and other events. They do the wine and I don’t see anyone drinking from it other than the people from the church themselves. My MILs church does the little shot glass cups. Much more sanitary. I don’t even like the whole “peace be with you” ish either. I wave at everyone. And when it’s unavoidable , I purell immediately after.
