This is the scary stuff that is going to harm more Americans than the big public outcry items... Everyone is focused on repealing the ACA, his golf outings, his tweets, etc. In the meantime, the GOP is trying to pass things like this that people don't even realize....

Re: New potential law would let employers genetically test workers

Was anyone else surprised to read this in the article?

Employers got virtually everything they wanted for their workplace wellness programs during the Obama administration. The ACA allowed them to charge employees 30 percent, and possibly 50 percent, more for health insurance if they declined to participate in the “voluntary” programs, which typically include cholesterol and other screenings; health questionnaires that ask about personal habits including plans to get pregnant; and sometimes weight loss and smoking cessation classes. And in rules that Obama’s Equal Employment Opportunity Commission issued last year, a workplace wellness program counts as “voluntary” even if workers have to pay thousands of dollars more in premiums and deductibles if they don’t participate.

So are they saying the shitt described in the text above is actually happening now?
Really???

Yes, it happens at my workplace.
But they put it forward as a 'discount'.
Fill out this questionnaire and get a 5% discount!
Give us your blood for analysis and get a 8% discount!

Non-smokers get a discount. Unless smokers goto a smoking cessation session then they also get the 'discount'.

I don't do any of the questionnaires or volunteer any info. Because I'm waiting for them to turn around the next year and say 'your premium is going up because your cholesterol is this and your weight is that."

At my husbands old place of work, 4 years ago they put in the questionnaire thing. First year, it was just questions for a discount. Second year it was "you have to show proof you goto dr for checkups twice a year' to get the discount. Third year it was you had to lose weight/improve cholesterol/improve blood presssure/etc to get the discount.

How would they know if you were a smoker? Wouldn't everyone who smoked just lie and say they didn't to get the discount?
And does insurance cover physicals twice a year tbat they require for a discount? Because i have only seen a physical covered once a year.

The people in HR know who smokes just seeing who is standing outside every hour or if they want to get crazy by looking at access card logs. On the document they make you sign saying you are a non-smoker it says if they bust you, you have to goto smoking cessation or they will make you repay the discount that you received.

As for the doctor visits, i think its 1 physical a year then a 'follow-up' appointment. Because surely they will find something wrong with you in the physical appt that you will need to followup on X months later.

ETA: You also get a discount if you goto the gym X amount of times a week. You have to have an approved gym sign off the dates/times you were there.

If they take blood they can tell if you are a smoker. Nicotine shows up in the blood.

This happened to us when we got life insurance. DH's blood tested positive for nicotine, except he never smoked a day in his life. Turns out they mixed up his sample with someone else's.

DH's insurance is like that. He's the carrier so he does it and gets a discount for the plan. I would never submit my test results and/or blood to an employer. He was able to show test results to them but would not have submitted blood directly to them.
Such BS.
