new phone scam
The caller asks "Can you hear me"
When you answer "yes" they record your voice as proof that you agreed to a purchase of something.
Don't say anything, just hang up, or better yet, if you don't recognize the number don't answer the call.
Pass it along, especially to older folks.

They call you later and say they are going to sue you because they have proof of you saying yes - and then try to strong arm people into paying. (If you wire the money to XXX or give us your credit card we will go away.)

I always agree better be safe than sorry. It looks like this one is not "something"...yet?

A CBS News report on the purported "Can you hear me?" had prompted police warnings in 2016, but yet again we found no indication that anyone who had actually been scammed out of money by saying "yes" to a caller had stepped forward. (It's not uncommon for police departments to spread dubious crime warnings on a "better safe than sorry" basis, such as one about a $100 bill carjacking ploy.)
The "Can you hear me?" scam for now seems to be more a suggestion of a hypothetical crime scheme than a real one that is actually robbing victims of money. In messages we left with the BBC, the FTC, and the Consumer Federation of America, we asked a question absent from all the news reports we've encountered about this scam: "Are there any documented cases of people being victimized in this manner?" We have not yet received any affirmative response to those queries.

new phone scam
So....
I got a call last night. I pick up as it's a local number (understand I am a girl scout regional leader and handle 483 people who have access to my number).
Me: Hello
AJ in the bathroom in the distance: Yes
Person on phone: nothing
AJ: I'm going poo right now
Me: Well that's lovely but I'm not talking to you but thanks for the announcement
Person on phone: hangs up
So if in a few weeks/months I'm being scammed now you'll know why.
*sigh*

Totally confused. If they can take your voice out of context and claim you agreed to something, why can't they fake your voice? Or your signature?
How are you "giving" them anything by saying yes?
And how would that ever be enforced in court?

I don't think that they would actually try to enforce anything. They are just trying to get the 'scardey cats' that will pay.
Having your voice saying yes in the middle of a string authorizing payment for something would scare some and make them pay to get rid of the issue.
if you're not one of those people who will pay, then they'll probably just leave you alone.

Something like this actually happened MANY years ago at an office I used to work for. The secretary was on the phone and however the conversation went, they recorded her saying yes to something and a few weeks later they got a bill for something (I can't remember) and when they called to question it, they replayed the recording of her saying yes.
I get a lot of calls on my cell phone that go like this:
Me: Hello
Woman: Hello
Me: Hello?!?!
Woman: oh, sorry, I seem to be having trouble with my headset. Can you hear me now?
Then I hang up.
