Would you stay in a hotel in this situation?

DH is visiting his friend in Seattle with our 2 boys. I will not be going. Friend is a recent widower with 2 girls similar age as our boys. They just got a new au pair who is getting settled in.

DH's friend insists that DH and the boys stay at their house. He also said DH can drive his late wife's SUV around and DH doesn't need to rent a car.

I strongly feel that DH should stay in a hotel and rent a car. It is an emotional time and I think everyone could use some space. Plus there is also a time difference and I know the family eats dinner late 7pm. That would be 10pm our time and way too late.

Would you get a hotel room or stay at friend's house?

Cost is total non factor.

Re: Would you stay in a hotel in this situation?

I would get a hotel.
Regardless of the circumstance I am just not comfortable staying in someone's home.
I like my own space at the end of the day.
Even if I planned to spend all day and night with them, I'd want my own space to go back to and unwind, sleep, shower etc.

I agree with you 100%

I would stay at the friend's house. If his friend is asking, maybe he is lonely at home and can use the comfort. Maybe he doesn't want space. I'd follow his lead. IMO he might be insulted if your DH did that and that's the last thing he should feel right now...

I'd actually probably stay with the friend in this situation. I'm sure he could use company and support and probably wouldn't offer/insist if he didn't want it. I wouldn't worry about dinner times or anything. If your kids are hungry earlier I am sure your dh will feed them they'll probably adjust fairly quickly too.

Eta: ultimately I'd just support whatever my DH wanted to do.

I would stay. If he is insisting, it might mean he wants company, doesn't want to be alone during this time. I would stay.

The friend might be lonely and enjoy your families company. I would say rent a car though, it might be insensitive to the kids to see your husband driving their mothers car.

This, I would feel weird about driving the late wife's car around.

I think the au pair will be driving their mother's car. The au pair arrived this week and DH is visiting next weekend for Columbus Day weekend.

Guys are different, I think my husband would totally be ok with staying with his friend in this situation. I would rent a car though. The widower might really be looking forward to hanging out with your husband and just having beers at night together.

You can't really factor in the time difference because I doubt your kids are going to be going to bed at 4pm.

This. If he recently lost his wife, my guess is that he could really use the company and companionship, and his kids could sure use the distraction of some friends to play with.

At the friend's house for sure. The friend's needs come first, IMHO.

This is what I was thinking. His friend might be craving a little company.

If the friend is asking him to stay at the house then I don't see the issue. His wife just died and he probably would love the company so he doesn't feel so lonely.

Well, what does your DH want to do?

If he is comfortable staying; then he should. His friend I am sure could really use his friendship and companionship right now.

Otherwise, I really see no reason in staying in a hotel if his friend is insisting. It will be fun for the kids too.

Stay with friend. The kids can play together and when they go to bed the adults can hang out. It will help the friend emotionally.

Rent a car. Stay with friend. Imagine ur husband having to take the kids to hotel alone. The kids will want to be together!
