well I had this discussion down in Florida this past week, it was brought up by an acquaintance, and i'm sitting there like
dh knows this dish and he's born and raised on the UES

I ate it once at a Cracker Barrel. It was gelatinous. I am not sure if it was supposed to be that way, but that was how it tasted. I did not find it comforting.

Absolutely -- my mom made it growing up as a kid -- cooking the chicken (with paprika if I remember right) in a bit skillet, making bisquick dumplings on top and using sour cream somehow to aid in the sauce....YUM! really yum! Think I need to call my mom for the recipe.....she still makes it on occasion....

Yes! I make it several times a year in the fall/winter. Love it! Crowd pleaser at my house.
For the record the Cracker Barrel one is gross.

i've had it and i think it's gross. i don't like the dumplings. they're just blobs of dough that steam/boil in the liquid and they taste like pure evil.

I make chicken and dumplings in my crock pot, and it comes out so good. The dumplings for us are just biscuits dough though (I drop the dough in the crock pot during the last hour of cooking). My kids LOVE it!

I've had it, I don't love it though. I have issues with wet, squishy bread. lol I prefer good old fashioned chicken pot pie over chicken and dumplings.
