chiropractic billing

I'm seeing red tonight over a bill I received from a local chiropractor. My 18 year old daughter saw a local chiropractic for a hamstring issue (she is a serious runner). When she returned, she told me he performed a sonogram and some xrays which I frankly wasn't thrilled about as I believed it was completely unnecessary and just a way to bill. Had I been there most of the tests would not have occurred. Today, I received an EOB from my carrier showing he received a little over $500 and that I still owed him $1300. I'm hoping he plans on writing the balance off, because although she's 18, I am the policyholder and was unaware of the services until after they occurred. I believe he took advantage of a young girl and in so doing performed unnecessary testing. Legality aside, am I being unreasonable?

I have been several times to a Chiro, and each time that it was for a different problem, he took x rays to make sure that through his treatment he wasn't hurting me. When you say sonogram - there's a treatment they do using ultrasound that does something to muscles, so that's a treatment not diagnostic. Maybe not the answer you want - but I'd rather have a Chiro/dr be sure of what they are treating me for and do a test or two first.
Re: the money - If I were you I'd call the office. The fact that you got an EOB from insurance and not a bill from the dr should *hopefully* mean that he's not actually billing you for it. I had a dr once who billed crazy amounts, my EOB showed I owed the dr, but the dr didn't actually require that payment from me and just accepted what the insurance company paid him. I don't know if that experience is a norm or if I was lucky.

I have to agree the sonogram is a treatment and the xray is done to make sure it's the right treatment. Seems high but is that because you haven't met your deductible?

Partially because of the deductible. My real issue is that she has treated this issue successfully before with other chiropractors as well as with her trainer at school (she's a college athlete) and none of this testing has ever been performed. I really believe this was completely about billing and as I said, had I been present, there would have been less diagnostic testing and a lot more clarity. I guess I'll have to wait and see what/if he bills, before having a conversation with his office.

I agree with others about the sonos and xray. I wouldn't jump to conclusions about the billing until you get a bill or discuss with them. It sounds high to me, like an amount before in network discounts.
I definitely remember going to the doctor by myself at either 17 or 18 and getting a chest xray. I don't think they were taking advantage. I understand you might be more likely to question treatments (like I question more than my DH), but then you probably should have gone with her if she can't handle it herself.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you get a bill from his office.

I used to do billing for a chiropractic office, we always wrote off the balance and simply accepted the Copay. I'm assuming they will do the same.

I agree with above though, it wasn't a sonogram, it was most likely the ultrasound machine. And my bosses took x-rays of new patients as part of the initial visit.
